WERA National Vintage Series: Road Atlanta Morrow's day at Road Atlanta By Drew Lincoln BRASELTON, GA, MAR. 13 he WERA National Vintage series came to Road Atlanta for the second of the 22 events held in the series. The six-lap races, which were held in conjunction with the Saturday portion of a WERA Regional Sprint weekend, used a four-race format to group together motorcycles of equal T You've probably seen him around. He keeps his bike purring like a big cat Then one night, he's taking the' long way home and pow! The most dominant rider of the event was without a doubt the current WERA National Vintage series National Champion, Mark Morrow. Using his trusty multichampionship-winning RZ3S0, Morrow won three of the four combined races, and only an electrical gremlin on the starting grid prevented what could have been a clean sweep of the weekend's races. Race A lumped Formula RD, Lightweight and Heavyweight Classics together, making for a diverse field of racing motorcycles. From the outside of the front row, Richard Lucas launched his RD400 spec racer to the front to lead the first lap, but Mark Morrow, coming from the middle of the third row, was gaining on him and took over the lead before the halfway flags. The two riders were the class of the field, pressuring each other heavily while managing to navigate the slower traffic of the different classes. On the white-flag lap, Morrow was visibly drifting the spindly tires of the RD through tum 12 before the start/ finish line in order to open a gap on Lucas. He~ent on to win by a two-second margin. Race B combined Formula 500, Midd1eweigh t Classic and V1. Morrow, on the second row of the 29-rider field, pulled off the grid with a mechanical problem, later to be diagnosed as a faulty on/off switch on the handlebar. At the drop of the green flag, the whole front row became locked in ba ttle for the entire length of the race. Mike Mathews got the holeshot from the middle of the front row, with John V. Stauber and Joey Naval close behind. Stauber and Naval traded positions several times during the race, with each taking a turn at chal- Fortunately, he had liability insurance from McGraw.
