COLLECTORS Sekich slams the door at Mazda Trucks MX' By Stacy Jensen BERTIiOUD, CO, MAR 7 More than 480 riders lined the track along 1-25 to participate in the third round of the 1999 Sports Riders Association of Colorado and Mazda Trucks Championship MX Series. The event gave spectators and those who drove by a great look at SRAC racing. The freeway crowd brought in the curious, including the Denver Broncos' Vance Johnson and his family. The crowd was treated to the sight of some intense competition, especially in the 125cc Novice class, which had 4S riders. The first qualifier saw Matt Vance jump out front with the holes hot, while behind him, anxious riders pressed. Around the west end, Dan Sekich, who began the moto in fifth, started his charge, passing Forest Himmel and then dropping out of sight. He emerged with two additional riders behind bim: Michael Archuleta and Jonathan Oppermann. A fast-paced race along the south straightaway turned the lead over to Sekich as he jumped by Vance over the tabletop. Oppermann caught Sekich's tail wind and he also flew by Vance and down into a hard left-hander. Pushing Vance in the turn/' Archuleta squeezed by on the inside, advancing to third. With a sweet pass over the pyramid on Oppermann, Sekich ran away with the qualifier as Archuleta, Vance and Oppermann fmished second, third and fourth. Armstrong stole the holeshot and the lead, which he held until the checkered, when Marco Gonzales, who had been bumping handlebars with Armstrong, saw his chance at the finish line and, with a little more throttle, took first. Armstrong finished second, Jacob Lartz third, Andreas Watt fourth and Ryan Williams grabbed fifth. The semifinal transferred the top five riders James Meyer, Travis Pralquski, B.J. Buckendorf, Chad Schara and James Brooks - into the main. As the gate dropped and 40 riders headed up the hill, Gonzales had the lead, but Sekich waved by..bye as he completed the first lap and was on his way for the win. Gonzales slipped back to fourth, while Archuleta moved from fifth to second. Armstrong held on to third, and Christopher Hall took fifth. HaJJ had finished eighth in the second qualifier.
