Events f (Left) David Alari (58), Brian Thienes (76) and Tim. Farley (60) fight for holeshot honors in the Over The Hill Gang's Novice-class contest at Perris Raceway. (Right) Dave Donatoni scored the Over 30 race honors and teamed up with Jonah Street to win the Team Race at the SRA Grand Prix at Carlsbad Raceway In California. .• Patin had his work cut out for him in the opening mota, as he found himself near the back of the pack while Chris Taylor and Shaun Trabert ran at the front of the field. Taylor crashed himself bac.k to sixth on his second circuit of the j.B. Memorial track, handing Trabert the lead. Trabert kept his KX125 out front for the win. Patin climbed all the way up to third, behind the Honda of Brandon Norton, where he would finish. Patin made things easier on himself by putting his Siamin Motorsports/Flum Racing/Nationwide Cycle-backed YZ125 out front on the first lap of moto two. Norton and Taylor were trading second place back and forth, with Traber watching from a close fourth. The race was all Patin's, as he led every lap to sew up the overall with his second-moto win. Taylor had problems again and dropped to an eventual eighth-place finish. Norton stayed ahead of third-place finisher Deuce Rutledge to take home the second-place trophy with 2-2 rides. First-moto winner Trabert rounded out the top three with a 1-4 score. A couple of good starts was all Darrin Staffer needed to pick ·up his first-ever CRC win in the Vet Intermediate clas•. Staffer put his Dick Allen Yamaha/Pro Circuit-sponsored CR250 into the winner's circle with two wire-towire victories. Mike Licitra was runner-up in bOtll motDs over Eric Hameister, c.r. Watanabe and Leo Saul. Stiffie-backed Suzuki rider Troy Welty was untouchable in the Vet Pro class; easily going 1-1 for the fin;t-place payback. Jimmy Roberts and Frank Costanzo argued over second place both times out, with Roberts coming out on top. Roberts retu.med to ace the first 250cc Intermediate moto, ahead of Nick Mairose and Brent Gilliam. Mairose got the jump off the secondmoto start, while Roberts had to play catch-up. Roberts was quickly up into second place, but there was no catching Mairose this time and Roberts had to settle for a runner-up showing on the score sheets. Gilliam ended up third, over Chris Reed. Lovett numero uno at Perris Supercross By Chris Sanchirico PERRIS, CA, MAR. 7 Pro Valve/OC Number Plate-backed Doug Lovett was in top form as he domina ted the Over The Hill Gang's ovice class. Racing took place on the all-new Perris Raceway, which has a challenging new layout littered with enough jumps and technical sections to cltallenge a rider of any ability. The track received rave reviews from th~ Vet racers, who greatly appreciated the effort put into the track prep and design. When the gate fell for the tart of moto one, it was YZ rider Shawn Pelham claiming the holeshot. Hot on his rear fender were Tim Farley, Brian Thienes and Chris Mulvania. Before the first lap was concluded, Pelham lost the lead to Farley, but he quickly regained the position. Farley, in second, found the huge doubles very intimidating, and he was quickly relegated to fourth by the high-flying Thienes and Lovett, the latter coming from a midpack start. By midmoto, the top three - Pelham, Lovett and Thienes - had distanced themselves from the field. While in control of the lead, disaster struck Pelham: He tangled with a lapped rider and took a soil sample. Unable to restart his bike, he would eventually finish in 14th. His misfortune was Lovett's gain, as the latter cl.:'1i.med the lead, with Th.ienes in second. The fastest man on the track was the Alpinestars/Three Brothers/Scott Gogglesb.:lcked David Alari, who put in a very impressive charge from the back of the pack to challenge Thienes for second. With two laps to go, Thienes stalled his machine and Alari passed him for second. As the white flag flew, Lovett had a comfortable lead, but the battl~ for second intensified as Alari almost endoed over a double, aHowing Thienes to close to within a bike length. Thienes passed for second, but Alari was able to retaliate just before the checkers to reclaim second. Thienes ended up in third. Meanwhile, up front, it was Lovett easily taking the win. The second moto proved to be as fast and as furious as the first, with Mulvania ahead of the class and Thienes, Lovett, Farley and Alari in tow. Early in the race, Thienes attempted a double when the rider in front of him put the brakes on, forcing Thienes to come up way short. He had to puJl off the track with an injured knee. Farley was again uncomfortable with the large doubles, as AJari flew over his head and into third. Farley was relegated to fifth place; with a fifth in moto one, Farley took fourth overall on the day. The battle for first began to sizzle as Lovett reeled in Mulvania in the rhythm section. Lovett made his move, using better timing to take the lead. Lovett quickly established himself a the leader and pulled away. Alan, running in third, put in a late-moto charge, looking for a way around Mulvania. With half a lap to go, Alari made a daring pass to the inside to nail down second. At the checkers, it was again Lovett with the victory. "The new track is awesome, wit_lenty of room for passing," said Lovett. "I'm a jumper, and ['mfaster than everybody today." Alari's 2-2 secured second overall on the day. Results BEG: 1. Doug Quinlan; 2. Chuck Elsea; 3. Lee Radder; 4. Dan Matis; 5. KClth Smith. NOV: I. Doug Lovett; 2. David Alan; 3. David Vinlove; 4. Donatoni flawless at SRA GP Donatoni continued to pull away and, as he made his second trip down the drag strip, Fountain trailed in second. Adams worked his way around Blough and Statham for third and was closing in on the Yamaha of Fountain. Blough and Statham continued to battle for fou.rth. Statham dived to the inside of Blough on the asphalt and outpowered him down the drag strip to secure fourth. With Donatoni out to a 15second lead on lap three, the battle for second between Fountain and Adams was separated by a bike length as the duo entered the motocross track. Fountain manage to hold off the continual pass attempts of Adams and emerged on the drag strip ,vith a slin>, five-bike-Iength lead. Statham followed in fourth. Donatoni controlled the lead on lap four, but the battle between Fountain and Adams raged on, cutting Donatoni's lead to 10 seconds. Adams continued to hound F9untain; he made his move, cutting inside Fountain, as the riders crested the freeway to secure second. Donatoni took the white flag with a 1Q-second lead. Adams charged vallantry but ran out of time. Donatoni too.k the checkered flag, with Adams finishing second. Fountain came home third, with Statham and Jerry "Black rounding out the top five. CARLSBAD, CA, FEB. 28 A warm winter day and excellent track conditions agreed with David Donatoni, as he piloted his Honda to a wire-to-wire victory in the Vet Expert class at the Southland Racing Association's Carlsbad Grand Prix. Donatoni, gating on the far inside, grabbed the holeshot and led the field to the first lefthander. Chad Blough trailed in second, with Scott Kellar, Bryan Statham and Craig Adams filling out the top five. Donatoni led the pack out of the canyon as they approached the motocross track. Second belonged to a charging Greg Fowltain, who had been able [0 knife his way through four riders in the canyon. The Suzukis of Blough and Statham followed in third and fourth, respectively. Meanwhile, Donatoni pulled out a five-sec· ond margin over Fountain as they thundered down the drag strip.
