REb MOUNTAIN, CA, FEB. 14
Kawasaki's Dave Ondas flexed his big-bore
muscle, daimi!,g the overall win at the 49th
annual Four Aces Moose Run Hare and Hound.
The Team Green star was among the leaders
right from the staIt and quickly powered his
way to the front.
'1 had a good bomb run," said Ondas. "I was
right behind Abe Baumann at the trail head."
The mile-long bomb run was located just
west of Pipeline Road, about half a mile south of
Teagle Wash Road, and headed south toward
the west end of the sand hills in the Spangler
Hills ORV area.
KX5OO-mounted Abe Baumann had obviously chosen a lucrative path on the bomb, as he
grabbed the holeshot and led for several miles
before being passed by Ondas. Check one was
located eight miles into the race, and Baumann
still beld the lead, with Ondas in second and his
Team Green cohort jeff Capt in third.
"I was right behind Ondas in third at the
bomb," recalled Capt. "[ got by him and chased
Abe for about .five miles, but then Dave passed
me back for second. Right after the course
looped back to the south, Abe went down,
putting me in second and Oodas in the lead."
Ondas cruised into the pits with a substantia] lead, followed by Capt, Baumann and ATK
USA's joey Lanza. Kurt Caselli was sandwiched
in between two superfast seniors, Charlie Barney and Kevin Hasten.
"] didn't get a real good start," said Caselli.
"] was probably just inside the top 15, and] just
kept passing guys when I could. I passed Barney
early in tbe second loop and took off after
Lanza, but [only caught his dust every now and
then."
Meanwhile, Lanza was also fighting the
heavy dust.
'1 caught up to Baumann a few times in the
tight stuff," said Lanza, "but once it opened up,
he was gone."
The remainder of the circuit wound through
the open desert ali the way to the finish. Ondas
was never challenged.
"I just rode my own race," said Ondas. "1
didn't have any problems, and my Kawasaki ran
perfect."
'1 didn't have to beat Ondas to win the Vet
dass," replied Capt. 'Td wick it up a little every
time I saw Abe migbt be dosing the gap."
Ondas took the checkers with room to spare,
followed by Vets Capt and Baumann and 250ccdass winner Lanza. Caselli took top 200cc-dass
honors, and Barney brougbt his Mota Westsponsored Gas Gas in at sixth overall to win the
250cc Senior Expert class.

Goertz gets even
at Rockne HS
By Chris Bailey
ROCKNE, TX,MAR. 7
Oifford Goertz rocketed his Yamaha to victory
and scored the biggest comeback win of the year
by daiming the Overall honors at round four of
the AMA Texas Championship Hare Scramble
Series.
As the l8-rider AA dass jumped into the
first turn, many of the top Texas riders - induding Goertz, Pat Hohman and motocross legend
Kent Howerton - found themselves taking soil
samples as the rest of the dass fought througb
the melee. When the AA class leaders made
their way around to the first spectator area, Darryl Wills, Cody Potts and Craig Chedsey led the
charge. At the end of the first 20-minute lap of
the technical 8-mile course, Honda rider Lynn
Bailey moved into lead, with Potts on his rear
fender.
As rain began to fall, Bailey opened up a 30second lead and appeared to be·in control. Quietly, Goertz was moun·
a charge from dead
last that eventually carried him to within sight
of Bailey. As the two riders began the. white-flag
lap, Bailey crasbed in the same turn that had
taken Goertz down at the start. Bailey quickly
remounted and held a five-second lead, but the
damage had been done. Goertz and Bailey
whipped the spectators into a frenzy by busting
