AHRMA invades Tulare By Roger Brophy 50 TULARE, CA, FEB. 27·213 The Mongers hosted AHRMA's Western Regional TT and motocross competition at Tulare Cyde Park, under warm skies. The weekend kicked off with an open-traction IT on a three-eighths-mile oval reminiscent of the old Ascot IT. Racer turnout was goqd, which forced the organizers to fun a lot of mixed classes, but well-balanced gates provided good racing. Although Saturday's 'IT competition favored big twins, there was a lot of hotly contested sideby-side action in several classes. The IT was a lot of fun for most competitors, and it was a great warmup for Sunday's motocross. About 200 riders showed up on Sunday, which made for a 13-moto day. Racers were required to do eight laps during the first round of motos, but since the Tulare track is rather long. laps were shortened for the second round of motos. Most two-class riders took a liking to the revised sd,eduJe. Wayne Sumner and Danny Davies battled it out for Over 6O-elass honors. Wayne crashed in moto one but remounted his Triumph-USA to eventually win the class. The Sportsman Twin Expert race was a shootout between Matt Rohr, Craig Howard and Clark Sumner. Rohr came out on top of the battle. Lee Fabry topped the 125cc Intermediate class onbis Hodaka. Results Sunday 30+ EX: I. ScottSilva. 30+ INT: 1. Bill Arbogast. 30+ NOV: 1. Phil Nystrom. 40+ EX: 1. Kellogg rapid at Two Rivers By Gregory K. Corns Photo by()awn Winczewski MILLIKEN, CO, FEB. 213 Boulder Yamaha/FMF-sponsored Josh Kellogg decimated the competition in the 250cc A and Over 25 A dasses with two 1-1 sweeps and ran 3-2 for thiJ'd overall in the 125cc A class at the 1999 AMA District 25 season opener, hosted by the Rocky Mountain MotOCTO 5 Association at the Two Rivers Racing facility. With 450 total racers and 15 of the region's finest on the line for the 250ccc A-dass race, Pro Circuit-backed Shawn Morgan rocketed his KX into turn one first. Kellogg hooked up behind Morgan, with Keith Campb'ell, Jared Carlson and Matt Karlsen following. The front five began to pull away from the field within a lap, and by lap three Kellogg had made a pass for the lead. Calculating his attack, Campbell moved in on Morgan and, in the same whoop section, grabbed second as the two exited the finish-line-jump area. Kellogg steadily pulled out a five-second lead and comfortably crossed the finish line to take the d'eckers, with Campbell, Morgan, Carlson and Karlsen following. Wes Hale, last year's AMA District 25 champion in the 250cc A dass, brought his Fox-sponsored Suzuki in for sixth. Kellogg twisted up' the wick and turned the momentum from his first-mota win into a scorching flag-to-flag run in moto two. After grabbing the holeshot, Kellogg proceeded to pull away from the field. Campbell, who got pinched off in the start, found himself climbing up from 10th. Carlson, in second and working on Kellogg, could only come within three seconds of the leader, Morgan battled Karlsen for third, while a hard-charging Campbell moved into fifth by the end of lap two. Wl,ile Kellogg enjoyed an eight-second buffer, Carlson had his hands full with Morgan breathing down his neck for second. As Carlson and Morgan Tow1ded the circuit wheel to wheel, Campbell made a late-moto d>arge on Karlsen for fourth and gained the po:;ition as the two emerged from the whoop section. Kellogg took the win, with Carlson holding on for second. Morgan, Campbell, Karlsen and Hale followed. "1 gues~ l can attribute my wins and earlyseason speed to the workout program I maintained during the off-season," said Kellogg of his finishes. ''I'm feeling reaJly good. Anstead steadfast at Elizabeth City MX By Jay Hauser ELIZABETH CITY, NC, FEB. 213 A healthy turnout of riders ensured great racing in all classes, b~t at the end of the day it was Brewer Cycles/Scott/Boyesen /Thor / FMFbacked Chris Anstead who captured the toughest win of the event. Anstead held steadfast and went to tI,e front of the 250cc A dass to start the series off with the overaJl win, then backed it up with third overall in the 125cc A division. Anstead definitely had his work cut out for him, as he launched out of the hole with a poor start as the first 250cc A-class moto got under (Left) Another holeshot for Josh Kellogg (73), as he cruises to overall wins in the 250cc A and Over 25 A classes at Two Rivers MX in Colorado. (Above) Chris Anstead put together an impressive ride to garner second in the 250cc A class. way. Sand pecialist Mike Martin grabbed the holeshot and Scott Shipley nailed down second ahead of YZ400 pilot Rob McWhorter, Casey Martin and Shane Shipley while Anstead wandered around in sixth. As the lead pair worked the course, Shane Shipley began to work his way to the front, taking Anstead with him. Shipley worked up as high as third before he succumbed to the dreaded arm pump. As Shane Shipley faded backward, Anstead steadily caught up to the lead pair and was able to work his way past Scott Shipley. Martin had enough of a lead to hold on for the moto win, while another Pennsylvania hotshoe, Kevin Brodsky, started to put some late-moto pressure on Anstead. Anstead, however, held on to the second spot, just feet ahead of Brodsky, as Scott Shipley retained fourth over Sitek Racing's Mark Wagner. In the second moto of the 2S0cc A class, Casey Martin grabbed the holeshot, followed by Shane Shipley, Anstead and Mike Martin. Anstead took a few laps to check Martin's and Shipley's lines and then put on his charge to the front. It took Yamaha-mounted Anstead just three laps into the moto to secure the point position. He then went on to take the win. Mike Martin moved into second late in the moto, putting Casey Martin back in third. Brodsky and Sh.,ne Shipley rounded out ti,e top five. The other Shipley, Scott (no relation to Shane), gated dead last after getting. sideways on the concrete pad. It took him nearly all mota to work his way up to an impressive Sixtl1, putting him in the top five overall. The 250cc B dass that ran in a staggered start with the A-dass boys also provided some top' notch racing action. In the end, Elio Perei posted a perfect score over Shawn Howerton and Ian Fortune, who recorded second and third in both matos, respectively. 1t came down to a threeway battle for the final two spots in the top five between Jeff [lay, Stephen Benoy and Kevin Rothrock. At the end of the day, it was Day and Benoy rounding out the top five. Results so (4-6): 1. Jllmj~ Pilkington (KTM); 2 Lauren Hire (KTM); 3. Chris Slurp (KTM). 50 (7·8): 1. Bobby Buhr (Cob); "2.
