Michelin has a new DOT-appr'oved Supersport-legal race tire - the Pilot - and it was off to a pretty good start in the AMA 750cc Supersport class 'witli a victory in its debut race in the series. The new Pilot is said to bring Grand Prix racing-tire technology to the street, with what it calls Radial Delta construction, combining a radial casing, zero-degree belt (like those used on most street tires) and two angled cross plies (like Michelin's racing tires). This, Michelin says, gives you the best of both worlds: a lot of outright grip, as well as predictable and stable handling. The tread pattern is said to minimize tread squirm under acceleration and decelera tion, wi th a totally smooth, slick-like shoulder for maximum' grip at maximum lean angles. Two compounds are available, Race and Race Soft, and sizes are available in most common modern sportbike sizes. DOT-approved but designed with racing in mind, prices start at $141.75 for the front and $189.11 for the rear. Two sizes are available, a 1380cc kit (3.75-inch 'bore) for 1200 Sportsters and Buells, and a 1200cc (3.5inch bore) kit for '883 Sportsters, said to increase displacement without the rpm limitation of a stroker kit. Both kits feature aluminum-alloy cylinders .that do away with cast-iron sleeves in favor of a proprietary nickel/silicon carbide-alloy bore plating that is said to provide maximum thermal performance. The cylinders are said to minimize distortion, allowing tighter tolerances with the Wiseco high-performance pistons for more power, longer life and quieter operation.
