Team Valvoline claims Homestead' By Lisa Theobald HOMESTEAD, FL.FEB.14 Team Valvoline EMGO's Joshua Hayes took home the trophy for first place in the Unlimited Grand Prix at Homestead. For most of that ride, he was tailed by his teammate Grant Lopez, who finished just behind him in second place. Mike CiccOllo held off the pack for the first lap aroun-d the course, but Hayes slipped underneath him in turn one to take the lead and domina te the race. On the next lap, Lopez slipped around Ciccollo on the front straight and charged after the leader through turn.one. By the third lap, Hayes held a six-second lead over his teammate, and just behind them a battle for third was raging between Ciccotto and· David Roy. As the two leaders did ahead of hjm, Roy slipped underneath in turn one to claim the third place on the podium. At the halfway mark, Hayes just walked away with the lead as the top four maintained their positions through to the finish, slowly separating themselves from the pack behind them. The teammates each took home two firstplace trophies. Earlier in the day, lopeZ won the GTO and Heavywcight Supersport races, and Hayes won Mjddlewcight Supersport and also finished second to his teammate in the GTO and in second place in the GTU. Lopez...,t the pace in the first race of the day. Local number-one rider Emanuel '"M.anny" Manusuthakjg led the first two laps of the GTO, but Lopez took over the lead in lap three, push: ing Manusutham back to second, with Hayes close behind in third - but not for long. By the fourth lap of the race, Lopez was being chased by new second-place rider Hayes. The top two ran close together until they got caught up in lapped traffic. Lopez weaved through the slower riders with ease and began to put some space between himself and his teammate. Manusuthakjg dropped out of the race, leaving Ciccotto, Roy, Rick Narup and John Bowman to do battle for third place. When the checkered flag finally flew, Lopez finished a strong first, with Hayes not far behind in second. . Results ~ .. .c:: ~ ::;: 36 EX GTa: 1. A. Grant Lope:c; ( ui); 2. JoshUll Hayes (Suz); 3. There was plenty of great racing throughout the day. However, when the Pros took to the track, Jeremy Hinrichs was there to win " and win he did, in both the Open and 250cc classes. As the gate dropped on the first moto, it was a mad rush to that -all-important first turn, a qwck right-hander turning to a small table. As riders and machines came into the tum, local racer Donnie Bums took the holeshot, while cloSe behind was Tom Smith, Scoll Burris and John Murray. Over the table, Burris moved to first, while Smith, Clint Eliot and Murray, going into the south wash and advancing up the lUll, made the exaggerated whoops look like cake. Coming from cighth place, Hinrichs began a charge, as he passed two riders in the wash. On the uphill whoops, all but Burris saw his back as they advanced to the uphill 5-turn, where Hinrichs took advantage of a tighter squeeze on the inside for the pass. Burris moved into second as Kelby Pepper, who gated in 1lIh, worked his way up to Wrd. In the lead, Hinrichs was m the driver's seat, although Burris tried without success to pass during the last few laps. At the finish line, the order was Hinrichs, Burris, Pepper, Murray and Lane Swink. Burris got the second-moto holeshot, with Adams, Smith, Joe Pena and Pepper in tow. Hjnrichs started a slow 13th but advanced to sixth by the end of the first lap. Swink was right on his tail. Kevin Hall fell after Ule firtish line and moved to last as Hinrichs passed Pepper on the uphill whoops and then sneaked around Pena. Now in third, Hinrichs began to push around the tower turn, pressing Adams a.nd moving to second. He chased Burris up into the horseshoe turn at the north end of the track, where he was five seconds behind. As the two began up the long northwest hill and into a left-
