U.S. Off·Road Championship series Round 7 Myers is the man' By Mike Larson ELPASO, IX, FEB. 2 cott Myers ended his run of "close but not quite" finishes at round seven of the U.s. Off-Road 'Championship Series at El Paso's Sun Bowl. Stadium. Myers, who played the fill-in role earlier this year for his White Brothers teammate Spud Walters while he recovered from an injury, has been turning in a string of consistent finishes, and he finally broke through with a mainevent win. Myers ran second in the first part of the main 'event and then capitalized on a mistake by leader Walters. Walters ended up on the ground and Myers motored on to the win. Chris Ridgway turned in a solid second-place finish, while Walters struggled home in third. The El Paso round threw most of the series' regular competitors - and the PACE staff - a curve ball. Those used to the usual hard-packed track found at most of the events were surprised by the soft, sandy soil at the El paso track. It was almost like riding on the beach, and track con.ditions changed throughout the evening. The track crew had to grade and repack several areas of the track throughout the night, as the bikes and ATVs dug all the way down to the plywood covering the field. Ohio's Chris Knox continues to lead the series point standings, but this week he arrived to find waiting for him a ne~ S 1999 Husaberg to replace tlie tired 1996 model that he has been riding throughout the series. Knox earned the toughguy award for the evening, as he was suffering from the flu. Knox was running a 102-degree fever that left him looking a little ragged and unable to speak by night's end. In spite of his j[]ness, Knox managed to finish the main even t in a solid fourth place, and he still leads Chris Ridgway in the point standings, 775-760, while Walters sits in third with 704 points. The first heat-race win went to Walters, who had a good battle with Myers. Heat race number two saw Yamahamounted Ridgway grab the holeshot and quickly stretch out a lead. Ridgway styled to the win ahead of a hard-fought battle between Troy Kalina and KTM pilot Mark Roop, who ended up second and third, respectively. After the track crew performed a quick track fix-up, the 12-lap main event was staged and ready to go. Walters and Myers were quick off the line, but it was Ridgway who held it on longer and led the field around the first sweeper and over the double on lap one. Entering the first tight infield corner, it was Ridgway, Myers, Walters and Knox in a tight pack. Walters got the better of Myers and Ridgway through the infield and took over the lead by the second lap, as Ridgway slid back to third. Through the first part of the race, Walters and Myers put a little distance on Ridgway. Myers was glued to Walters' rear fender, with Ridgway third, while the ailing Knox, Roop and Kalina were squabbling over the fourth-place spot. Near the halfway point, Walters had started to stretch out an advantage over Myers as they beg,m to work through the tail end of the field. Walters looked to be in control; then he suddenly lost the front end .of the YZ400 in the big sweeper and went down. By the time he got up, Myers was long gone, and Ridgway had slipped by as well. With Walters back in third, Myers pulled out all the stops the last few laps, keeping Ridgway a safe d·istance. behind. Walters tried to make a run to the front, but once again found himself piCking the Yamaha up out of the sand. Walters remounted. his bike quickly and managed to stay ahead of Knox and Roop as they continued their fight for fourth place. On the last lap, Myers had it all under control. Ridgway, who continues to try to catch Knox in the point standings, nailed down second. Walters calJle home a disappointing third, while Knox held off his travelling partner, Roop, for . fourth. Troy Kalina rode home a lonely sixth, with Jason Birdsong, Jacob Kinney, Tony Fuller and lone Honda rider David Riordon rounding mit the top 10. Myers was happy with his win, and felt a pre-race tire change had been a big boost. "We came here ready for a hardpacked track and it turned out to be all sand," said Myers. "We made a tire change today and it worked great_" "I just brain-faded," said a slightly dejected Walters. "I went into the sweeper and it. was kind of slick - actually, it felt sliCk like mud. The front end just washed out and'l went down. That's racing, 1 guess." CN Sun BOiNl Stadium EIPaso, Texas R'1sults: February 2, 1999 (Round 7 of 11) O/A: 1. Scott Myers (Yam); 2. Spencer BlJITONWJLLOW, CA, FEB. 28 Another fine turnout of riders descended on Buttonwillow Raceway Park, creating some great racing action as the Super IT racers continued their series, and l)on'Canet was the big winner'in the Super IT Premier contest. . Canet and Rick Pearce battled throughout the eight-Iapper, stoppinll. once for a dqwned rider as they swapped the lead - until PeaTce ran off a portion of the dirt track and Canet elongated the margin to nearly three seconds at the checkers. "I blew up my good motor at yesterday's AHRMA TI," said Pearce, "and so 1 had to ride this bike that has too much low end and makes it real twitchy to ride. .l sort of was sashaying all over the place and then ran wide there in the infield, but it was fun." Former Suzuki Superbike ace Tommy Lynch was third, with teenager Casey Yarrow moving up to finish fourth over Shane Scott and Mark Cernicky. . It was a real family affair for the Yarrows, as Casey's dad, Allan, won the Sportsman division on a YZR400. Dirt tracker Jim Kesler took second in tbe Sportsman show over Kay Vetter and Brok McAllister, while Don Howard and his RM250 topped the Middleweight Supermotard class <'5Ver Casey and AI Yarrow. Canet crashed in the hea't race while chasing the younger Yarrow's YZ250 and withd,ew. McAllister and Cernicky rounded out the top five. Shane Scott won the Knobbies class after Robbie Reeder bashed his Yamaha, with Chet Dubois taking second over Paul Cates and Greg Klassen. The best battle of the day was in the >
