Matt Swenson (352) holds off James Straub (416) during moto two of 125cc Beginner action at the Verde Valley Motorplex in Cottonwood, Arizona. Swenson went on to win the event. said the Primal Impulse/Silkolene/ Shift/Bill's Pipes-sponsored Dostal. HHe got the holeshot and got away real . quick. I was trying my best to catch him, but my arms pumped up early and that's all I had. H The consistent 4-4 rides of Tilley earned him the third-place money over the 6-3 of Narita and the 7-5 of Zaremba. YZ250-mounted McGavran led the charge early in the first 250cc Pro moto, with Metcalf, Dostal and Evans giving chase. Metcalf pushed McGavran back to second after a lap, but McGavran was out front after another circuit of the recently redesigned track. Metcalf pow-ered his way around McGavran for good on lap three. McGavran quickly came under fire from .Dostal and Narita. Metcalf continued on to greet the checkers with five seconds to spare. Dostal knifed under McGavran to finish in second place. With time runiring out, Narita outdragged McGavran between turns to secure third, with Nelson taking fifth over Magnus Olsson. Dostal jumped out to the secondmoto lead, just ahead of McGavran and Narita. First-moto winner Metcalf gated fifth, but after a lap he could be found slowly circulating the track in last place. HI got high-sided in a rut on the first lap," explained Metcalf afterward. '1 hit my head pretty good and bent up my bike." Up front, McGavran passed Dostal and built up a small lead. Narita g.ot around Dostal at the halfway point and set out after McGavran. The last couple of laps turned into a tight race for the lead between McGavran, Narita and Dostal, with McGavran getting to the checkers first to take home the overall with a 4-1 score. '1 got a good start and started to pull away and then I kind of almost crashed in the whoops and hurt my ankle and wrist, so I kind of backed off and they started to catch me," McGavran said. HI started making some mistakes. Then I started looking for some lines, and by then there was only a couple of laps to go. I want to 'thank Bones at Pro Circuit for getting my suspension dialed in really good." Narita, who rides for Honda of Japan, went 3-2 for the second-place payback. He said he liked the track because of all the jumps, but he really did not.like ~c ond overall. Dostal came out on the wrong end of a three-way points tie to earn third with 2-3 finishes. Masanori Enomoto ran fourth the entire second moto to go 7-4 for fourth overall to top the 8-5 of Olsson. Sean Thorton led every inch of the first 250cc Intermediate moto over Dusty Walters, Billy Laninovich and John Burr. After getting the holeshot, Thorton overshot a turn early in the second moto, which allowed Walters to run out front. Thorton eventually worked his way back around Walters to go I-Ion the day. Walters went 2-2, over the 4-3 of Laninovich and the 3-5 of Burr. Jason Wood led much of the opening 125cc Intermediate race before he bobbled a jump and then tagged the rear wheel of another rider a short time later, falling back to fifth. Michael Sleeter went on to take the moto win over Walters and Chris Sprenkel. Sprenkel and Laninovich battled throughout the second moto, with Sprenkel getting the nod and the overall for the day. Walters went 2-2 to edge out the 1-4 of Sleeter for second overall. Gustau .Riber smoked the other 24 125cc Novices in the first moto, but a midpack start in round two made things look dismal for the Honda rider. Riber charged righ t up un til the end of the moto and was rewarded with the overall for his 1-4 effort. David Sullens went wire to wire for the second-moto win and second overall. Nathan Jones' 3-5, Brandon Hamlett's 2-7 and Patrick Terry's 10-2 rounded out the top five. t:III Perris Raceway Perris, california Results: February 28, 1999 (Round 2) PIW (4-6): 1.
