Former IT specialist Larry Legarra was the big
winner at the opening round of the American
Historic Racing Motorcycle Associatioo regional
motocross series at the Hangtown-Prairie City
'State Off-Highway Vehicle Park in eastern
Sacramento County.
The Washington State rider topped three
classes of the 22·moto program. Legarra's
biggest challenge came from Dave Dotson, last
year's winner in the Over 40 Expert class.
Legarra gated both molos well, though he
had to chase down early first-moto leader Ken
Vanderhoof and Dotson for the first-moto win.
The pass for the lead was made easy after Vanderhoof bailed, and Dotson could not keep up
the pace in the deep mud.
Legarra had the se..c0nd-moto st~rt wired
and he held off Vanderhoof and Dotson. Dotson
took second overall and Mike Atkins took third,
ahead of Vanderhoof.
J.P. Morgan and Bill Goldfoos dueled for the
Over 40 Intermediate honors. In moto two, Chris
Pjetrczyk ruined Goldfoos' fun as he sneaked in
a pass to claim second on the day, pushing
Goldfoos back to third.
Legarra/s other wins came in the 500cc Premier and Sportsman Open Twin classes. Dick
Mann topped the Premier Lightweight class
aboard a BSA. Dotson topped the Sportsman
500cc Expert with a 2-1 count over Ken Vanderhoof's 1-3 moto tally. Steve Parker took third
with a 3-2 score.
Erik Carter won the Sportsman 500cc Intermediate class with a pair of wins over David
Starr and Christian Oteio·
The Over 30 class saw Scott ,Silvia win the
Expert ranks, with Tom McKinney taking second, while Carlos Romero put a 3-1 effort to top
the Intermediates. Tom Maples scored a pair of
wins in the Novice division.
A good-sized Over 40 Novice class saw Bu!taco jockey Steve Davis win both motos over
Dan Garonsky and Dexter Meyer, while John
Gulliford won both rounds of the Over 50
Novice division ahead of Mike Folena and Bob
Behmes. Rick Mayher topped the Over 60 class
by beating Jim McDanrald.
lIJustrating the "family" side of the series,
Duane Spence won the Over 60 Expert class over
Ron Dotson, Dave Dotson's dad, while a thirdgeneration Dotson, Sean, garnered third in the
Novice class, behind Dan Lee and Dexter Meyer.

Quale flies at OTHG MX

SAN BERNARDINO, CA, FEB. 13
Midcities Kawasaki/Honda-backed Duane
Quale combined good riding and a little help
from the competition to top the Over The Hill
Gangs Intermediate class. Southem California's
finest Vets assembled at the tight, technical, offcamber REM track to mix it up at round two of
the young OTHG 1999 season.
Rocky Hash used his many years of experience to nail the holeshot. The likes of Michael
Marrinl Eric Barr and Quale were in pursuit.
Hash slowed no mercy to the competition sharing none of his sacred lines as he rocketed away
from the field with a comfortable lead to the
checkers. The hot action on the track was the
battle for second between Barr, Marrin and
Quale. In an effort to pass Marrin for third,
Quale found himself off the track, but he was
able to return without losing a position. Marrin
began to pressure Barr for second. The two
entered the tricky off-camber uphill side by
side, with Marrin passing for the runner-up
position. Meanwhile, Quale had worked his
way up to the rear wheel of Barr and was looking to paSs. The trio now engaged in a dogfight
for secOnd. Barr launched his machine down the
steep hill past Marrin to reclaim second. With
the laps winding down, Tom Wadovich
charged hard from out of nowhere and
appeared to be turning the fastest lap times.
Wadovich made quick work of Ma.rrin to claim
fourth and then passed Quale to take over third.
With one lap to go, Wadovich was all over Barr
for second.
As the two riders screamed downhill, Barr
went left to avoid a rider who had gone down in
the- middle of the h:ack; Wadovich.seized his
opportunity, blitzing to the inside and securin!l
l
second at the checkers, with Barr hanging on for
third.
Moto two saw some new faces up front, with
Walt Bennett taking his tum at the helm; Quale,
Kevin Tail, Rick Tatlow and Hash were all in
tow. The riders rounded the track in a tight single-file line. Bennett managed to build up a
slight cushion, but it would all be for naught as
ue got tangled with a lapper and went down,
allowing Quale to take the lead. Bennett was
able to remount in second, with Tait and Tatlow
holding down third and fourth. A slow-starting
Hash cou!d not find his first-moto speed and
finished sixth. With one lap to go, lappers
became a problem for Quale, a Uowing Bennett
to close in, as he was desperately searching for a
way past. Quale began to ride a very wide track
and thwarted Bennett's relentless pressure to
hang on for the victory. Quale's 4-1 would be·
good enough for the overall, while Hash
received a gift, going 2-6 for second, with BaTT's
3-5 locking in third overall.
