(Especially if I happen to make it to the main and get my name mentioned.) Through my racing, I hope to how my kids that teachers can, and do, have lives (even fun ones!). Your article will be on the teacher's lounge bulletin board tomorrow. Keep up the good work. Brad "School's Out" Rudy Lakewood, CA Magazine-friendly Need more McGraths I know you probably don't get a lot of letters from women, but I had it on my heart to send a special thanks to Ken Cox and all the guys at Proline for the great job they did on Friday night (February 19) with the autograph signing with Jeremy McGrath. I was going to take my 10-year-old son T.J. to see Jeremy, and I did not know what to expect, because I had not seen a lot of in terviews and such with Jeremy. I prayed the night before that he (McGrath) would be the kind of person that every boy would hope he would be. The next day, I picked T.J. up from school and he was so nervous. This (McGrath) was his idol - next to Dad. When Jeremy walked in, I knew that I had nothing to worry about. He was so humble. He could not have been nicer. He surpassed all my fears of a mother wanting the best for her son. I'm sure his mother is proud of him today. Jeremy is a kind young man. What a wonderful role model Jeremy is for our children. We need more out there like him. Thanks to Jeremy for not letting m~ down. Laura Coppedge Marrieta, GA Teachers have lives, too I just finished reading the Off the Road piece by Matt Freeman (Issue #9, March 10). As a middle-school history teacher, and a third-division speedway racer·at Costa Mesa, I had to let you know that I concurred with you. Homeroom at my school is set up as a "Reader's Workshop." I encourage my students to read anything that interests them, as long as it's clean. Cycle News is at the top of my approved reading list. It's been about a year since I subscribed back to Cycle News after a 16-year hiatus. Back in 1983;1 had just graduated from high school and was the proud owner of a Suzuki Katana 1100 and the whopping $225 monthly payment that went along with it! Cycle News was the only source of Grand Prix race information, and we kept watch on King Kenny and that evildoer F~eddie Spencer. I wound up s'llling the bike to go to college and let my subscription lapse as well. After five years of school, followed by six years of marriage along with a white-collar job and all the trappings of adulthood, motorcycles are back in my life, along with Cycle News. And as corny as it sounds, Cycle News just seems like an old friend. No fancy upgrades, just good, solid news and bike-coverage reporting. So what brought me back into the cycle fold? A glance at what looked like another old friend - the 1999 ZRX-llOO (Eddie Lawson Replica). It reminded me of those dad-gum GPzs that could flail my Katana in the turns when I was younger. I had to have the grandson of a great superbike! Thanks for keeping the magazine friendly to read and informative to race fans. Mark Peoples Chattanooga, TN With the new bar-code scoring system implemented by the Desert Vipers this year, nobody had results on paper - not even unofficially, as they were completely reli·ant upon the bar codes. The information related in the article was gained from talking with riders and spectators throughout the course of the weekend on a casual basis, never with the intent of writing a two-page article on the event. Again, my apologies to Greg and any other riders who may have gotten left out after busting their ass all weekend. Brent Avis Encino, CA Russell a class act I just finished reading the interview with Scott Russell (Issue #7, February 24). This guy is a class act. He;-e is a guy on a motorcycle that's winless, and his goal is to help the team learn and win some races along the way (hopefully the Daytona 200). I have.this feeling if Scott wins nothing ills year, he will not bitch, complain, or point fingers. This man is in it for the love of motorcycle racing. Thank you,.Scott, for having the gut . to take a shot on America's grea test motorcycle. And thank you, HarleyDavidson, for having the brains to hire a great racer and an all-around good guy Scott Russell. Good luck to you both. John A. Muzika Lock Port, IL Giving thanks Avis says sorry First and foremost, I'd like to offer a sin9e.r:e apology to Greg Zitterkopf and all of his sponsors for the ·errors in the Adelanto '99 story. If I may. I'd like to offer an explanation. I was, in fact, at Adelanto tllis year. 1 was there to shoot photos for another publication - and photos only. I never had the intention of doing a full story. It was not until Thursday morning (after the race) that I received a phone call asking me to do a story on the race. It was because of this that there were no interviews or many of the other elements usually found in race reports. In response to Mr. Perez's letter (Issue #9, March 10), I myself am a Christian who races motorcycles and must give thanks to Mr. Perez for his great words of wisdom, for it made my faith in the Lord grow even stronger than it was before. Keep the faith, brother Kipp. And by the way, Mr. Perez, Jesus loves you. Ken McGregor Phelan, California Good Prairie Dogs I wanted to say thanks to the Prairie Dogs for putting on a great (grand prixl event at Glen Helen (March 7). Scott Russell The course was different from years past, and I felt it was a good change. It featured rocky and technical ections, tight and fast sections, and gave the riders a variety of different riding conditions. Silt and dust became problems, but all in all, I thought this event was one 9f their best yet. But... My only complaints were not enough course workers and too many sweep riders. It is irritating to ride in someone's dust for five miles, only to finally pass him and find out it is a sweep rider. Why were they on the course with a race in progress? It seemed there was more racing going on between the sweep riders than anyone else. Thanks again for an A-class race.
