BrIe I" GRAND NATIONAL Pole sitter Davis carefully deliberated and then selected a starting spot one position to the right of the inside pole, leaving Carr the opportunity to take the low spot, which he did. To Davis' right, Poovey, Landes, Russell and Hayden fanned out toward the outside pole in that order. Davis won, the drag race to the first turn, towing Carr, Russell, Landes, Hayden and the rest of the field onto the back straight. Russell had gotten a great start and was looking to be a contender .. . . until he ran into turn three and nearly crashed. From there, he dropped back off the pace, ultimately finishing way back in 14th, ahead of Tysor and Steward - both of whom entered and qualified for their very first Grand National race.
