IRVING, TX, FEB. 27
o dne could have thrown Ke in
Windh'ill a better birthday
party than the one that he threw
himself. On the eve of his 21st birthday,
the Team Honda rider grabbed the
holeshot and blew out the candles early
in front of 42,716 partygoers under the
light of Texas Stadium. In fact, if it were
not for the venue's supercross-record
crowd, the entire affair would have been
a one-man party, as Windham opened
up a 10-second lead by the halfway point
of the 20-lap main, leaving the rest of the
field in the dust - literally.
In Windham's dust on the dry, hardpacked, slippery Texas clay, Suzukimounted Larry Ward survived an allout battle between himself, Honda's
Mickael Pichon and Mazda/Chaparral
Yamaha's Jeremy McGrath. Ward gated
seventh and was creeping up on
Pichon's rear fender by lap 12. Five laps
later, Ward pas ed the quickly fading
Frenchman, leaving a scuffle between
Pichon and McGrath well behind him.
"The last half of the race, Jeremy was
close to me but I ju t kept worrying
about trying to catch MickaeJ," Ward
said about his charge to second. '1 was
riding smart, and I was fortunate
enough to come out on the top of that
battle. You had to reaUy concentrate on
the track, especially coming out of the
corners, because it was very slippery.. I
was just trying to make sure I did all the
obstacles every lap. It worked out good second for me on a hard-packed, slippery surface is pretty good."

(Above) Kevin Windham was the first man to the white line and the first man to the finish during a runaway win at Texas Stadium. The win
marked Windham's second of the season.
(Below) Racing was this tight for most of the night. Larry Ward (7) leads Mickael Pichon (5) and Jeremy McGrath (1) in the final few laps of
the main. Ward went on to finish second and Pichon barely held off McGrath to take the final podium spot.
