Rettke repeats at Zars Ranch Hare Scramble By Chris Bailey FLORESVlLLE, TX, JAN. 31 Australian Peter Rettke reeled in a second consecutive Overall A-elass win at round two of the 1999 AMA Texas Championship Hare Scramble Series. Following the monster AA-class turnout at the series opene,. 19 AA competitors showed up to do battle on another picture-perfect 75degree Texas winter day. Rettke shook things up right off the deadengine start by pulling the holeshot over Texas legend Dean Lane. While the rest of the AA class fought through the blinding dust, Rettke and KTM pilot Lane pulled out to a comfortable lead by the end of the first lap on the tight and technical 7-mile course. Rettke then put the hammer down and set s.:,i1 to a two-minute victory over Lane. Clifford Goertz showed why he has owned the AA-dass championship for the last two years. Less than five minutes before the start of the two-hour afternoon race, Goertz's YZ250 suffered a major motor problem at the starting line. Without any time to consider an alternative, Over 50-class champion Bobby Reynolds stepped forward and offered Goertz his new CR250 to race. Goertz was given one minute to ride his new motorcycle up and down the start straight to get ready for the start. Not only did Goertz prevail, he finished a solid fifth overall and one position ahead of Bert Reynolds. Lynn Bailey rounded out the podium, with Cody Potts hot on his tail for fourth overall. Overall B-class winner Michael Carlton enjoyed his first b;g victory in just his second race out of the Junio' Boys class. The young and talented rider from southeastern Texas railed to a hard-earned victory, putting the competition away early and winning with a three-minute margin over an equalJy talented Andrew Trousdale. The overall C-clasS victory went to Andrew Davis, who took the checkered flag over David Turnage by one minute. The most impressive story of the day came out of the 44-rider-strong Open C class, as Lacy Thompson emerged from a four-kick start to finish in fifth place after an hour of racing. Lorie Whitmire pushed her way through the boys to settle on a 12th-place finish. Kawasaki rider .Chris Jesperson roosted away with the 60cc win, and Chad Goertz showed the rest of the 50cc class nothing but the tamights, claiming firstplace honors.
