'5 . FEBRUARY 5, 6, & 7, 1999 Motorsports kicked off their 13th year of promoting motocross in Southern California with the first of the weekly Saturday motocross races held at Glen Helen Raceway Park. One of the best contests of the day was in the Over 25 Beginner class, where David Gladhill tallied two hard"'fought moto wins en route to his overall victory. At the start of moto one, it was Yamaha rider Brian Pappalardo snagging the holeshot. Mike Wyrick pushed his CR250 into the second position, while Gladhill heJd third. Gary Taylor had his booming XR600 in fourth and Robert Cumming was fifth as the pack completed lap one. Pappalardo's lead was short-Jived, however, as he bailed midway through the second lap and turned the lead over Wyrick. Gladhill spent the next few laps pestering Wyrick, but he could never make a pass stick. Meanwhile, Pappalardo had remoun.ted and was charging back into the fray at the front. Gladhill reacted well to the pressure of Pappalardo's charge, as he turned up the wick and finally managed to find a way around Wyrick. Once Gladhill had some open track ill front of him, he turned up the heat on his YZ250 and held a five-second advantage on Wyrick when the white flag flew. At the checkers, it was Gladllill in first, followed by Wyrick in second. Cumming took advantage of another bobble by Pappalardo and made a last-lap pass for third. When the racers blasted off the line in moto two, it was the Honda of Wyrick out front with the holeshot. Pappalardo again started well: He held the second spot. Next was Cumming in third, while Kawasaki pilot Dave Linder positioned himself in fourth. Gladhill row'\ded out the top five. Wyrick and Pappalardo engaged in a duel for the lead and the two racers began to separate themselves from the pack. GladhiJJ seemed. to need a couple of laps to sort himself out, but by the haJfway mark of the mota he had moved up into third. Again, Pappalardo could not survive an entire mota unscathed: He crashed and was unable to' continue. Gladhill moved right into Wyrick's shadow over the next few laps; then he put the pass on the Honda rider to take over the lead in the back section with two laps to go. Wyrick was not done for the day, however, and he spent the next lap trying to bang, bash and burrow· his way past Gladhill for the win. All of Wyrick's efforts came up short when be made a last·ditch attempt to overtake Gladhill three turns before the finish. The pass did not work and Wyrick briefly stepped off his machine. Exhausted, Gladl1ilJ coasted in for the win. Wyrick. was able to recover quickly enough to take second, while Cumming once again finished up in third. IResults 80 BEG: I. Trnvis May (Hon); 2. California Racing Club's first motocross of the year, held at Los Angeles €ounty Raceway, saw Jimmy Patrick split mota wi.ns with Matt Elliott to earn the 80cc Beginner-class overall honors, Elliott jumped out to the early first-mota lead, but it was short-lived, as Patrick and Brannen McGinnis pushed him back a couple of places on the opening lap.
