OTHER H-D NEWS Several other noteworthy announcements have been made by HarleyDavidson with regard to its ongoing attempts to improve customer relations and seek out new sales opportunities. First, Harley-Davidson has announced that the Dyna version of Harley's latest engine incarnation, Twin Cam 88, will be available for sale through the Harley-Davidson Genuine Motor Parts catalog. The 1450cc Twin Cam 88s will be available in two versions on a limited basis for 1999: a silver-and-polished version, and a blackand-chrome version. The silver-andpolished engine carries a suggested retail price of $3495, with the black-andchrome version ringing in at $4495. The engines come sans transmission, carburetor, manifold or tinting cover. Transmissions are available in matching finishes for $1569. (gSimilarly, Harley-Davidson has been involved in a successful pilot program for the past six months, offering factory-remanufactured Evolution engines to its U.s.. dealer network. That program is now official, meaning that any genuine Harley-Davidson Evolution owner can have his engine sent back to the factory for a complete teardown, inspection, overhaul and upgrade to current stock Evolution specifications and cosmetics, thus allowing the owner to obtain a factory-certified remanufactured engine complete with a 12-month warranty. Turnaround time is approximately 14 days. Prices for the program have been established at $1995 for the silver-and-polished Evos. The price for black-and-ehrome Evos is $2295. Harley officials say that highly modified engines may be ineligible for the program. The current Evolution engine sales program through the Genuine Motor Parts catalog is still in effect. GHar!ey-Davidst>~nas issued a voluntary recall of all Twin Cam 88 engines produced before September 27, 1998 approximately 14,000 engines. Officials say that the problem is a simple fix. Engines are being recalled due to a problem with the OE rear cam bolt and washer and the crank bolt. Harley owners who are affected by the recall can bring their motorcycle· to their local authorized Harley-Davidson dealer and ha ve the bolts and washers replaced with upgraded, shouldered bolts and textured washers, which will also be torqued to new factory specifications and held in place with a new threadlocking agent. Finally, Harley-Davidson is attempting to bring a world record to the United States. According to the record-keeping folks at Guinness, the record for the longest wintertime motorcycle ride is 1450 miles, currently held by Harley-David on of France employee Francois Carillion. On Friday, January 29, Harley-Davidson Motor Company employee Dennis Schaefer will leave Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and attempt to complete a round trip to and from Mount Rushmore, South Dakota, in time to catch the.Super Bowl on Sunday, January 31.
