Keeney three times at Salem Arenacross By Clay Light SALEM, OR, JAN. 9 Justin Keeney may be small in stature, but the diminutive speedster is big in talent, scoring three wins during the second of two consecutive evenings of CMC-sanctioned Arenacross action held ~tthe Oregon State Fairgrounds in Salem. Keeney djd, however, have tough competition in his 60cc Senior, BOcc (9-11) and Supermini classes. His first challenge came during the combined 60cc Senior/Junior swapfest. While Keeney eventually broke free from fellow KX riders Ryan Villoputo and Ajay Olinger, the two riders kept him honest for several laps. Keeney soared to unheard-of heights on his 60cc machine in his double moto rout, ahead of Villoputo and Olinger. Tyler Villoputo won the Junior portion, a.head of Honda-mounted Sean Bergland. Kawasaki rider Tate Major was a key player in the Supermini class, but after patiently trailing Major for several laps, Keeney soared ahead of Major to put his new Honda machine into the lead for keeps, followed by Joshua Hill. Keeney was also unstoppable in the second moto, nabbing his second win ahead of the ever-present Major and Adam Metzler. Hill and Yamaha-mounted Brock Chappelle rounded out the top five. When the dust and smoke had cleared from the close action in the combined 80cc (9-11) and (12-13) classes, Keeney had finalized his incredible evening with a three-class sweep after he held off his archrival Major. Although Major finished second to Kj!eIley in the race, he himself was a winner in the BOcc (12-13) class. Second to Keeney in the 9- to l1-year-old class was Hill, followed by Metzler, Chappelle and ViUoputo. However, Keeney's impressive performances were not the only such feats logged on the evening, as Yamaha rider Ryan Sweet also won three classes. Sweet posted wins in the 125cc, 250cc and Up The Hill Intermediate classes, which is pretty much the norm for the rider who this season has been so dominant in Intermectiate a,ction. While Sweet aced the 125cc class ahead of Eric Roth and Ryan Metzler, he got a rare roost of dirt from former National star Tony Graves in the combined 250cc Intermediate/Pro class. Graves, who last year contested the AMA Supercross Series and several AMA Nationals, used the race as a tuneup fOT the upcoming Seattle Supercross, convincingly using his Yamaha to lead Sweet, the lntermediate winner, to the Chaparral Racing' Beanie~ AXO A2 Package Deals IAdult $99"1 Adult package includes -A2 ]ersey-A2 Pants-A2 Gloves IYouth~ Youth Package includes -A2 ]ersey-A2 Pants-No Gloves ,;::/ t~~ ~ MOTORSPORTS ~ d"." <:;r~- --, ~...
