Wosickcame away the winner for the first time in' the series. Kunsman kindles Barn Burner Short Track By Mykeal Clark sANjOSE,CA,jAN 2 Mike Kunsman blew away all the competition 30 on his way to winning the feature event at the Barn Burner ~horL track. The 20-1ap race was hard-fought, even for Kunsman, who had to come from behind to take the win. At the drop of the green flag, pole sitter Rob Damron led Scott Alves into the first tum and held on to the lead for the first four laps. On lap four, a red flag flew for Dan Reger, who went down, taking Rod Spencer and Troy DeHerrera with him. On the restart, Tony Alves, starting from the last row, got a great jump on the field, passing fouT riders and then bolting into fourth place. Alves then set out for the front. A few lapb later, another red flag waved, bunchjng the field. Fifth-placed Kunsman left the line as ha.rd as possible on the restart, taking fourth from Alves. At the same time, Spencer was on the move, cutting through traffic with relative ease. Kenny Wedingfeld fell, taking oul Anthony DeMario and DeHerrera for another red flag. At the restart, Kunsman again left the line hard, taking over third and then second. Kunsman finally passed Damron for the lead not long after clajmjng second. All along, Spencer was following close behind, eventually taking second from Damron. He then set out to catch Kunsman. But Kunsman was not to be denied a win: He fought off all of Spencer's advances. A great race in the Over 16 junior mam took place between points leader Scott Heywood, Ryan Devonshire and Chris Canepa. Heywood held up the lead, followed by Devonsltire, but all the while Canepa was working his way forward. With three laps to go, Canepa got by Devonshire for second; then, as the white fL:1g flew, Canepa pulled alongside Heywood. They battled side by side down the back strajght and into the third turn. Coming out of tum four, Canepa got the lead by half a wheel and held on to the finish. In the Vet Junior main, Lynette Wosick started on the pole, and at the green flag she shot into the lead. Second-placed Paul Brunelli tried everything possible short of ramming Wosick to get by, but Wosick fought back and held her llne. When the checkered flag flew, it was Wosick claiming her first main-event win. In Under 16 Novice Modified competition~ Mike Rush won his first main event of the year. Chris Touchatt also won his first main in the series in the BOcc main. The 60ee class ran two mains, with Steve Bonsey and Dan.iel WeideJ each winning their respective events. Thomas passed Squires on the opening lap as Prince and Pocorobba pulled away from the field. Thomas then moved by Yoho and found that Prince and Pocorobba h.d checked out. Pocorobba hounded Prince for four laps until forcing his way by. Once into the lead, Pocorobba opened up a three-second lead that he held on to all the way to the finish. Prince, Thomas, James Painton and Sqmres rounded out the lop five. Pocorobba charged out of the gate to start mota two, with Yoho, Thomas, Painton and Jim Wilson giving chase. Thomas quickly passed Yoho and set his sights on Pocorobba. On lap two, Thomas pushed pasl Pocorobba and opened up a siz.,ble lead. Pocorobba, on his Banzaj/5mith/Xtreme-backed Suzuki, crwsed in second, knowing he had the overall. Yoho and Painton both experienced bike problems late in the race, moving Wilson, Renner and Prince into the top five. When the checkered nag came down, it was Thomas with the win, ahead of Pocorobba, Wil. son, Renner and Prince. ]n the 125cc Pro class, Renner, Prince, Thomas and Wilson mixed it up jn both matos, but it was Renner taking the overall win with a 1-2 tally over Prince's 3-1, Thomas' 2-7 and Wilson's 4-4. Dave Bowman used consistent finishes to wm the Over 3- clas (with a 3-2 ta.uy) and the Over 40 class (with a 2-2 la!Iy). Bryan Johnson abo won hvo classes: the 80cc (J2-15) and Superminj divisions. johnson posted a 2-1 score in Supermini class and a 1-1 in the 80cc (J2-1s) class.
