AMA Victory Sports Indoor Winter Series, Rounds 5&6 Events By Barbara Williams Photos by Loren Williams ASHEVILLE, NC, JAN. 1-2 earn Moto Planet's Robbie Horton was the hottest rider on the track for round five and six of the AMA Victory Sports Indoor Winter Motocross Series, held at the Western North Carolina Ag Center in North Carolina. Horton racked up three wins out of a possible four and took home $1750 from the Pro purse. Mike Katin's Pro Circuit-tuned Suzukis, however, gave Horton some stiff competition, while Jim Neese and Jon Boruff were in the mix of things as well. Friday's large number of entries forced multiple qualifiers in several classes, including the 12Scc A class. Ignoring the wea ther forecasts warning of freezing rain, a festive New Year's Day crowd filled the stadium as they braved the elements in anticipation of another grea t show in the Pro classes. Horton and crew did not disappoint them. Katin headed the field through turn one, crowded by Horton, Boruff, Neese and William Wilson. Intense pressure, however, finally got the best of Katin, as Horton slipped pa~t him and into the lea'C!. Later, Boruff and eese also sneaked by. While Horton hared off to the win, Boruff held off Neese's determined challenges for second all the way to the checkers, with only inches to spare. Hard on eese's fender, Katin ran out of time for a pass and had to settle for .fourth, just in front of Wilson. Boruff absconded with the holeshot in Friday's 2S0cc A main, flanked by Katin and Charlie Dunaway aboard his new Yamaha. Horton and Neese were queezed to the middle of the pack and began the march to the front, picking off riders one by one. Eventually, Horton and Neese emerged at the front of the field and kicked in the afterburners to give themselves a little room in which to maneuver. Neese hammered on the door, but Horton had it locked tight and took his second win of the evening. Dunaway, Katin and Boruff duked it out for third, with a little Todd Bennick mixed in for interest. Dunaway came out ahead at the final flag, with the top five filled out by Katin and Boruff. During the day on Saturday, the predicted freezing rain showed up, bringing with it sleet, snow and ice. Not surprisingly, many riders opted to hit the road for home, but the ones who stayed proved they were there to race. Katin took the 12See A lead, with Horton, eese, Hans eel, Wilson and Team Green's Josh Capps following in an angry little knot. Lap after lap, Horton looked for an opening to take the lead, and with three laps to go, he found it. Horton was riding strong, giving Katin no time to make a comeback. Katin had to ettle for second. eel rode brilliantly, holding off Crisp, Wilson, Boruff and Capps for the third spot. eese suffered a hard get-off in the reworked whoops and limped to the finish after getting up slowly. Regardless of the tight racing earlier in the day, it appeared that the Pro racers had saved their best efforts for last. In the 250cc A main-event start, Katin, Neese and Horton took the first turn side by side, and for the rest of the race they were never more than five feet apart. Neese showed no ill effects from his earlier 12Scc A crash, getting more aggressive as the laps ticked off. Although Katin refused to give up the lead, Neese was just as adamant about the second slot, keeping Horton in third, in spite of many - attacks from the Mota Planet warrior. (Above) Robbie Horton won three of four Pro races at rounds five and six of the Victory Sports Indoor Winter Series. (Right) Mike Katin (63), Jim Neese (69), and Robbie Horton (59) lead the pack at the start of Saturday's 125cc main event. Paul Justus, Capps, Brian Lane, Boruff and Nicholas Burns presented a fine battle of their own that would have been great to watch all by itself if not for the war among the top three going on out in front. Justus and Capps traded racing insults until there were only two laps to go, when Justus fell in the same ection of whoops that had earlier claimed Neese. With the pressure from Justus off, Capps wa free to take a relatively easy fourth-place finish. Boruff had jammed a finger in the 12Scc A main, and he backed off to let Lane pass rather than risk a crash.
