Steve Kramme Santa Rosa, CA Wllile the Yamaha tr ip took Rou sseall tllrough Sonollla County, it also ventured throug h the Napa Va ll ey and right through tile city of Napa. You are correct in ment ioning that botli offer brilliant roads and great wine - thouglt mixing the two is never recommended...Editor Trad ing Scott for Mam ol a? I wanted to drop yo u a line expressing m y appreciation for the Randy Mamola guest editorial in my most recent issue of Cycle Neurs . I reca ll seeing another piece by Ma mola not so long ago , and I liked that one, too . It'd be fant asti c if yo u co uld sign him up as a regu lar Gra nd Prix com mentator. His cre d ib ility is ind isp u table, so wh en yo u rea d his pieces, it's only reinfo rced . And he writes quite nicely. I must s ay I'v e go tt e n weary of Micha el Scott, as it seems he' s often go t an axe to grind. The issues he addresses usually see m peripheral and I see little ev idence that he ' s any mo re knowledgeable abou t GP racing than when he began writing about it. Mam ola has a lways see me d like a pretty classy act, but I wonder whether ther e ar en 't a few othe r people whose ra cin g pa rti cipati on ha s been pretty d eep , and who mi gh t become worthy contributors to Cycle News with a littl e encouragement. Maybe their writing is a bit aw kward, bu t that's wh a t editors are for. Motorcyclists are bo rn story-tellers. nother negative comment: A lot of us s topped reading Alan Ca thcar t's racer tests long ago. He', a skilled rider, not doubt abo ut that, but he ca n no more com pare GP bikes than you a nd I can. For different reasons, we don' t read his road tests, either. He's Floyd Clymer reincarnated - he loves everything he rides. Tha nks for a pub licatio n that continues to be very good . Bru ce Finlayson Ma dis on, WI While I agree uiith yOIl thnt Ma lllola's insights are often [asciuating and we like . having him as part of tile team, it's ridiculous to believe that he uiould be willi ng and capable of doing what Mi chael Scott docs on a weekly basis for Cycle Ne ws . Tllose wllo believe that anyone can si t dowlI and write informati ve and enter taining 7000-word race reports on a SUII day night and have them to us on Monday morn ing a re kid ding themsel ves . In dqf'llse of Sir Alan, he also doesn't beiie e u he is capable of comparing 500cc Grand Prix bikes, but what lie can do is provide the layman with an idea of toha! it' s like to try to ride the machines that Doohan and co. race... Editor Mr. Daytona and the VR I th ink it' s great that Harley-David son h a s sig ned Scott Ru s se ll to rid e the VRI000 next year. If that thing is ca pable of winning a race, the n Russell will be the rid er to d o it. I jus t ho pe tha t Ha rley will g ive him a pit crew befittin g his tal ents in st ead o f a bunch of weekend warriors on vacati on from the e ngi n eer in g depa rt m e nt at Harl eyDavidson. I als o hope they a re payin g him a whole lot of mon ey to rid e that thing. If he 'ca n win some races, maybe we' ll see so me of tha t techn ology trickle d own to the street bike s that Harl ey cou ld buil d. If th at wer e to happen , I mi ght even co nsi der bu yin g an o th er Ha rley . But until it happen s, I'll keep riding m y Kawasaki Co nco urs.
