have picked a better d ay, wea therwis e , to run th e Br oken Peg
End u ro. An unusuall y mild m id Novem ber d a y set th e s tage fo r th e
revival of an old, classic New Engl and
End u ro . Back in the early 1970 s, th e
Centra l Cycle Club used to hold Turkey
Runs, a lo ng with NETRA a n d AMA
N~tional End uros, spearhead ed by Max
Wlbley. They had qu ite a reputati on for
pu tti ng o n g re a t ev e n ts run through
farmland and classic Ne w Eng land trail
- tigh t and rocky.
Step forwa rd to 1998: The CCC ha s
evo lved into primarily a motocros s club,
sponsoring N ESC, NEMA and club MX
eve n ts. The club' s Turkey Run has survived through the yea rs and has always
been a fun, easygoi ng rid e, with ju st
en ou g h rough terra in t o m ake you
remember that yo u were riding in th e
Co n n ect icu t w ood s. Since the club ' s
membership is predominantly MX-rooted, th ey didn't ha ve th e resources to
spo nsor an end uro until one man set out
on a mission.
Erik [a rvas, a. k.a. "Big Erik," a d iehard ETRA Enduro and former tr ials
rider, wanted to revive the Broken Peg .
He team ed up w it h Frank Bauer from
the cl u b to "co- tra il boss" this year's
event . Co nce rned that he wou ld ha ve
difficulty ge tting perm is sion for the
ma ny acre s of private property th ey
need ed to run the eve nt, Erik and Frank
came up wi th a n in teres ti ng a ng le to
ga in s upport fro m th e lo cal fo lks. H e
ap proached the town about spo nso ring a
"chari ty trail rid e," from which all proceeds would be don ated to Canterbury
Elementa ry Sch oo l to s u p po rt th e art
ard music pro gra ms. This tactic enabled
tre club to obtain pe rmission for all of
Ire land that they need ed , and also ge ne ri ted a big interest from the locals.
"I knew that we' d nev er pull it off
w :tho u t th e su p port of th e land ow nen," [arvas sa id . "This idea ga ve us all
of the land we needed, plu s it genera ted
a lo t of int erest and su p port from th e
lo:al com m unity. They can' t wait for us
todo it again next year!"
Since Razee / E-Line /Factory Connection / Moose/ Shoei/Spec tro/Scott-s po nscred Kevin Hines had alrea dy wra pped
uo the 1998 ET RA En d uro G ra n d
championship a t the p revious ro u nd,
er ery one else was gunning to move up
01 secu re their spo t in the ranks . Enthusias m was high befo re the sta rt, as the
riders were anx ious to ride a new event.
Tnis en th usiasm, coupled wi th the fabulcus weather, drew nearly 190 competitcrs to the NETRA seaso n finale.
CRE rider and Tech Tub es pr esid ent
Bob White was the man on the move.
Setting fast times through the first couple of sections, he established a lead on
the field that no one could overcome .
"I didn' t think tha t I was doing tha t
well," White said. "I kep t cras hing in the
loggi ng sect ions, but I was charging
pretty hard . Luckil y, I go t throu gh the
mud bogs wi th ou t any tro uble. Once I
cau gh t Kev in (H ine s), th at helped me
ou t a lot. Ridi ng with Kevin is definitely
moti va ting ; pl u s, he he lped m e fin d
some grea t lines ."
The firs t section co nsis ted of so me
tight and muddy trail s, wi th a few hills
and plenty of downed trees . Pete Tanner
se t th e p a ce w it h a 3:37, follo wed by
Whit e (3:47), A Vet rid er Rich Seymour
(3:55) and Jason Cayer (3:59).
A brief reset and some ta r led to the
ne xt 's ectio n , which w a s in o re of the
same, only wit h bigger hills, more mud
and mo re logs. A steep, rocky downhill
led to so me easie r-goi ng tra il to the
chec k-ou t. B Light rid er Larry Silvia set
the pace at chec k four w ith a 7:05. Dave
Carlson Jr. was next fastest with a 7:25,
followed by Tanner (7:38), Hines (8:18),
Whit e (8:33), Factory Connection 's Rick
Cla xton (8:38), and Cayer (8:57).
This sectio n w as foll owed by so me
really fast, open farmland, sm ooth trail
and more farm land , as the course head ed towa rd th e g as s to p . Check fi v e
fou nd mo st riders dropping zero, a nd
so me A and B rid ers go t caught for one
or maybe a couple of points. The C rid ers, Super Seniors and Women finished
the d ay here, as they had been beaten
up enough by this point .
A known co n tr o l after th e g as
a llo wed most riders to get back on to
their original minute, and a tar connector section led to the Pachau g State Fores t loo p. Most rid er s were able to ze ro
thi s check as well.
Fr om th ere, th e co urse ra n over a
reall y roc k y p ow er-line uphill fo r a
s ho r t sec t io n, w he re th e le ad p a ck
dropped one point, foll owed by some
gna rly , rocky trail s that paraded up an d
down a few good-si zed hills, and back
to a known control at the finish .
After ta llying u p the sco res , it wa s
Whit e on top with a 12 for the overall.
"This nasty and slick.stuff really suits
my rid ing sty le," Whit e sai d.
Tanner posted some terrific scores for
the d ay and actually beat White's sco res;
the trouble w as, however, th at Ta nner
could n' t get his bike started on the line,
and he ended up leaving the sta rt check
four minutes late.
Cay er finished the day first AA and
second o vera ll wi th a 13, followed by
Hin es wi th a 14. Dave Car lson Jr. set the
pace in the A class with a 15 for A High
Point and fourth over all.
In the B clas s, Jim Price roost ed the
co mpetit io n o n h is way to a 22- point
score . Th e C Hi gh Poin t trophy w ent
home with Bob Stadig, w ith a scor e of
28. Keith Goodell was the fas test Su per
Senio r rid er of the day, ba ttling Gordon
Razee all d ay long to take the win . Both
finis hed with a 23, but Good ell came .ou t
on top after the tie br eaker s were tallied .
Paula Stewart rod e uncontest ed in the
Women's di vision wi th a score of 34 at
chec k three.
