Myers auction raises $120,000 O n the weekend of the final round of the NHRA Wins ton Drag Racing season in Pomona, California, an auction was held to raise money for the family of threetime Winston Pro Stock Bike champion John Myers. The eve nt, which was held after the first round of Pro qua lifying on November 13, raised more than $120,000 to benefit the fam ily of Mye rs, who was killed on August 9 in a nonracing motorcycle accide nt near his hom etown of Birmingham , Alabama. Th e evening's biggest spender was eight-time Winst on Fu nny Car cham p John Force, who spent a total of $48,500, includ ing $40,000 on a custo m Harley-David son mo torcycle that was do nated by d rag-r acing legend Don ."The Snake" Pru dhomme. Force eng aged in a heated bidding war wi th fellow Funny Car racer Chuck Etchells but u ltimately wound up wit h the auctio n's marquee item. Other big-ticket items included a John Myer s replica helmet.that was au tographed by a number of Winst on Cu p dri vers, an au tograp hed Jerem y McGrath helm et an d jersey, and a number of N HRA, NASCAR Winston Cup, and CART d rivi ng su its. Vance & Hines' Terr y Vance bought the Mye rs helmet for $6000 and bou ght a similar helmet au tographed by a number of N HRA racers for $2000. No t to be ou tdone, Byron Hines paid $3700 for an au tog ra p hed Rusty Wallace d riving su it, an d N HRA Pro Stock rookie of the year [eg Cou ghlin Jr. snapped up the McGrath helmet and jersey for $1450.
