A ust ralia - located about threehour's drive southeast of Me lboume - featured the la rge st American contingent ever, except for the two ISDEs that were hosted in the United States (1973 and '94 ). Forty-six riders from the United States competed and more than 200 Americans in all attended the event, many 'of whom did so through the AMA tour. To make things even busier at the American checks. Team USA agreed to help support about 10 riders from M exico and Costa Rica. Of the 46 American riders who started the Yamaha-sponsored Australian Six Days, all of them managed to impound their motorcycles at the end of the first day of competiti on. B ill Rush, however, had to utilize the "reimpound" rule afte r houring out when his Suzuki RM 125 suffered a top-end seizure. Afte r rebuilding the motor, Rush was allowed to impound his motorcycle and start day two.
