I w o-ti m e se ries champio n Fred Hoess finished this year's campaign on an u p note, tall y in g hi s 12th overa ll v ic tory in th e season-end ing Green Marble Enduro. Out racing for fun after clinching the series champions hip at the previous round , the Bromley Suzukisponsor ed rid er was one of an octet of rid ers to zero th e u ser-friendly Green Marb le course. Not one to rest on his laurels, Ho ess managed his clock the bes t, dropping a mere 12 emergency points en route to victory . "Last weekend's race (the Delaware Enduro) left a bad taste in m y mou th, [f because I go t lost and it probably cost me the w in," said Hoess. "I didn't want to back into the championship, and the win today takes care of that. I was looking forwa rd to a n o-p r essu re, fu n rid e, an d today' s course and conditions certainly delivered ." Tight scoring reigned among the day's top finishers. Mike McHale turned in his best finish of the season, claiming secondoverall honors and the High Point A trop hy . Pos ting an ot her naught sco re and minimiz in g e- poin ts , th e YZ400 pilot turn ed in a 0-19card, eking out third-overall seed Mark Hummel by a single e-point, The XR40D-mounted Hu mmel came in a tick behind McHale at 0-20, earn ing the first-place troph y in the Open A class. In another heartbrea ker, KTM rider Craig Shenigo likewise finished another second beh ind Hummel. The AA rider tallied a 0-21 score to fill the fourth overall slot and claim the firs t-p lace trophy in the AA class . Robert Mohn rounded out the top five overall, cnuising in with a 0-25 finis h - good eno ug h for the win . in the 200cc A class . The Gree n Ma rble En duro s tarted from a new, ye t fam iliar , place . Run in and about a coal mine in Pen nsylvania's Tower Cit y region, it is th e sa me spot that has been used for the Na tiona l Hare Scramb les Series round hosted by the Readin g Off- Road Rid ers. Ho es s p o sted n e a r -p e rfect scores at tw o of these three point-taking checks, zeroing them all an d minimizing his emergency-po in ts loss . In the first section, run right ou t of the morning start contro l, Hoess orchestra ted a perfect 0-0 score through the checkpoint no dou b t th e d ay's most challeng ing test. He stumbled some a-t check three, a section run without a check -in, posting 10 e-points, and finished a mere two seconds off the benchmark pace at check sev en. Hummel, Shenigo and McFlale posted perfect double zero es at check three, while McHale and A senior rid er C li ff Tenney b est ed Hoess at ch ec k seven, dropping one and zero seconds, respect ively .
