away afte r the pavement and I thoug ht I could outj ump him over the jump. I d efinite ly o utju m ped him, but I al s o bounced pretty hard off th e dirt and landed on the pavemen t. Luc ki ly th e bike hooked up and we went down the pavem ent straigh t dead even. Mi k e (Healey) held his line right up the fence line and I just outdragged him . Luckily, when yo u ride. with the pros, they usually hold a good line; otherwise I wou ld have went straight int o the fence." After Smail made the pass, there was nothing Hea ley could d o. "He just kicked my ass going d own that straightaway and there was nothing I could d o," said Hea ley about the d rag race for the lead . "He just outpulled me." Once in the lead, Smail was abl e to finis h the sixth an d final lap for his third win of the day. Healey rode his YZ400 as fast as it would go for second , ahead of IMS teammate Meyers . Drew finished fou rth, and Lehman turned hi s disastrous mid race ta ngle into a respectable fifth-p lac e finish . Eve n though Sma il wo n the race, he wa s still unhappy with the events that occurred. "I w anted to us e that race to check ou t n ew lin es for th e Hame l 100; instead, I had to pla y catch-up," Smai l sa id. "1 mig ht rid e th e Over 25 r ace tomorrow morning just to chec k things out. " Rain clouds rolled in Satu rday night and the course, which had dried out that day, got conside ra bly worse through ou t the night . It got so m ud d y that Smail ga m b led a nd decided not to ride th e Over 25 race, sa ving himself for the 1 p.m. Hamel 100. Hea ley was also eligible for the same race and chose to sit out for the same reason . Meyers, however, took a different approach and ran away wi th the Fou r-Stroke race. The strategy partly paid off, as he ran in the top five in the Ha mel 100 unti l d ropping out with a flat tire. Meye rs was not the on ly one to suffer a flat. As it turned out , flat tires were almost the deciding factor in the grueling lOa-mile race. With appro xima te ly 50 rid ers on starting line of the Hamel 100, Healey go t th e holesho t on a YZ125 . Behi nd him, Smail - and a whole new cast of characters - set out on the now-shorten ed cou rse. Th e fre sh faces included YZ4 00 pilots Spud Wa lters and Terry Fowler, CR250-mounted Atsuta, and Team Green' s Steve Hengeveld and Dave Ondas, who had both raced a District 37 desert race in Lucerne ea rlier befo re traveli ng to Elsino re. Some racers paced themselves, savi ng their energy for the long race , while others - like Healey - went all out fro m the drop of the green flag . -. " I h ad to push really ha rd to ge t Hea ley," sa id Smail, who rod e an SX380. " H is 125 w as working good in the begin ni ng a nd he was rid ing re ally hard, but I kn ew tha t riding a 125 was go ing to wea r him ou t, beca use he was going to ha ve to ri de twice as ha rd . Eve ntually, tha t's w ha t happened: He tired out a little bit and I got by hi m and just tried to maintain a good pace." • Also o n t he charge w e r e Fowle r, Meyers, Ed mo nson, Atsu ta, Walters and Manley, bu t as the racers completed lap afte r lap, many began to drop ou t, mostly due to flat tires. After two days of racing, the rocks aro u nd Elsinore had really begun to show their ugly head s, leavin g so me rid ers ou t of lu ck. Healey d ropped out with flats an d a sore hand he suffered as the result of a crash. Fowler and Lehman w ere al so among the fir s t to suffer tire and bike problems that preve n te d them fr om go ing any fur ther . Wit h the field thinning out, Edmonson was able to move up a few spots and set his sights on Smail. " A ft e r Heal ey and t h o se gu ys d ro pped out, I was comfortably running in third, battling with Meyer s," Ed monson sa id . "We w er e going pretty good and the n he fell by the w ayside a nd I m oved into se cond. Then , about halfw a y throu gh the ra ce , the hi gh speeds must have got to me , because 1 started to get a blister on my left hand. It was pretty painful and I couldn't really go full speed after that. I'm reall y d isappo in ted that I couldn't rid e hard enough to catch Smail. We didn't suffer an y flat tires, thou gh, because we ran Dunlop mousses . That h elp ed u s out a lot, I thi nk. I don't th ink this will be m y last tim e h ere , b e cau s e I really e n joye d myself." O ne look at Edmonson's bloody blister and it was evid ent why his pace had slowed d own. Back in the pa ck, some riders 'w ere suffering more than just flat tires. Lanza ma naged to rid e off th e side of a fir e road , losin g va lua b le p ositions in th e process. He would later make up many spots and finish l Ith. KX500-mo u nted Erik Wolfe su ffered a similar fa te and found himself back in 23rd . Reese came within a few laps of finishing and taking th e u nofficia l 125cc honors when th e bottom end of his KTM seized, endi ng his day. Walters, however, ma y have tu rn ed the worst ride int o the best finish. "I crashed actually four times out th ere, " sa id Walters, who finished fourth , beh ind Atsu ta . " It was kind of brutal ou t there, between al l -the mud and the lappers. I kind of go t a crummy start. I knew it was going to be a long race, bu t 1 wish 1 would have picked it u p sooner a nd stayed off the ground, because I know I could have got third . I pa ssed Ats uta and was pulling away from h im and then I crashed the th ird t im e a n d co u ld never ge t h im back, beca use later 1 crashed again. After that, I just tried to sm ooth things ou t a little bit and just fini sh . At leas t I didn't get any flats." Those who did su ffer flats and were able to keep goin g often lost cru cial time changin g wheels. Even .Smail had some d owntim e of hi s ow n , h oping that Edmon son would not pa ss him while he was changing his wheel. "1 go t a flat about two hours into the race," Smail said. "1 pulled in the pit and go t a w heel change and th en got back ou t there as fast as possible. I guess eve ryone else was having bad luck, so we just capita lized on it. The KTM ran great and 1 co uldn't have asked for a better race - or a better weeken d, for that matter ." It too k Smail approxi mate ly two hours and 45 minutes to complete 100 m il e s of th e course. Ed monson, his RM 250 and hi s left ha nd were very happy to see the checkered flag. . "I 'COuldn't go as fast as 1 wa nted to beca use of my han d , of course," Edmon- . son said. "The speed is totally opposite her e compared to the GNCCs. They are quite tight and technical compared to this, bu t it' s unbelievable here because we raced fo r th ree ho u rs a nd you're goi ng fast the entire time." Ats uta made his t rip fro m Ja pan worth w hile by finishing th ird . Walt ers kept himself upright tow ard the end for fourth, one spot ahea d of Manley. Sixth went to Hengeveld, who turned in one .of the rare trouble-free rid es. Tracy kept up a fas t p ac e a ll w e ekend , turning many heads by finishing seven th, and Murphy, d espite suffering fro n t and rear flats, finished eig hth. Ondas turned in a trouble-free ride s imilar to Hengeveld's , fin ishing nin th on his KX500. Ma rk Tilley pilo ted a 125cc KTM to an impressive 10th. Sm ail is only the second person to win the Hamel 100. 1996 and '97 winner Steve Lamson was entered in the event but was a no-show on the starting line.
