Smith was all over Reed, with Eide eq ually close in third as th e three front-runners started to se par at e themselves from the pa ck. As the moto pr ogressed , Smith could n't find a w a y a r o u nd Reed , but R e~ouldn' t pull away, either, and a t the fin i..;h Reed preva i l~ by a couple of bike lengths. Eide was right ther e in third until he put hi s fron t w ht..-el ov er the top o f a berm w ith a lap remaining a nd hand ed the po sition to the YZ400F of Jahner Faulkner. Reed re eled of f h i ~ seco n d ho leshut o f the da y, ahead of Smith aod Tomas Ponce De Leon . Smith quickly latched on to Reed 's back fender and was poised to mak e his m ove in to the lea d. Pu lling nex t to Reed as they s kimmed a series o f w hoops, Sm ith ke p t it on a litt le longer and was able to slip around Reed in the foll owing turn with no roo m to spa re. Reed wasn't abou t to let Smith get awa y and matched him move for move, just wai ting for th e KTM rider to make a mistake. Smith was flaw- 00 0\ 0\ ,...... 00 ...... With the whi te flag displayed, Smith had a couple of seconds on Reed; then he managed to put a couple of lappers between him and R....<:i for ' insurance on the fina l lap as he tCK>k the win. The battle for thi rd went d o\-\I1 to th e wire, ' wi th Eide hold ing off a determined Faulkner to sew u p th ird overa ll on a 4-3 sco re . Kruger slipped into the lead , passing Klimm. Moments later, Klimm attempted to re pass, only to fall in to the creek.
