Going into the fina l couple of turns, Nash stayed right behind Staten, wh ile Johnson tri ed to ma ke a move for second . Johnson tried to sq ueeze on the inside of Nash on the comer before the downhill, but they tapped and Johnson went down. Sta ten took the moto win, fo llowed b y Nas h, Pet e Ma t hia a nd Fish er. But those nam es we re not the winner in the Evo lu tio n Ex pe r t class; th a t w in belo nged to so meone by th e name of Tim Nash. Nash used tw o good starts and s tea dy riding to tak e the overa ll, besting form er champions Rex Staten and Rick Joh nson. Nash moved by Fish er on lap two throu gh an off-camber sweepe r. Both Staten and Johnson moved bv Fisher in the back section and were going af ter Nash. Johnson tried to go on the au tside of Staten, bu t the open ing go t shu t going int o th e next corn er. Johnson did no t kn ow that it was former Sou th African and m ulti-time Dist ric t 37 Cha mpion Staten tha t he wa s trying to pas s. " I kept s h o w i ng a w heel to th is Yam ah a rider, and he kept shutting the d oor on me," Johnson sai d. "I thought, 'Man, that was an agg ressi ve mo ve to be d oing here at a vintage race.'
