NASBIEBC Brakes Sport B Series ike F Round: Daytona International Speedway inal A lMin for McGrath By Henny Ray Abrams DA¥rONABEACH, FL, NOV. I here were 47 rid er s in the class, but this wa s a two-m an fight Da v id KWS Motorsp ort s ' McGrath facing off agains t 4&6 Cycle's Todd Harringt on for the EBC Bra kes Spo rt Bike title. McGrath would preva il, but not by mu ch, and it was only w ith the help of lapped traffic tha t his victory could be assured. Th e Kawasa ki-mounted Harringt on led from the start, and it took a while for McGrath and hi s Suzuki to join him . On ce he did, Harrington had his hands full, bu t he didn 't g ive up . Th ou gh McGra th passed him on the sevent h lap , Harri ngton took it right back and held the spot - right up until the end of the ll -lap , 39.16-mile race . McGrath took th e lead early in th e lap a nd had th e mu scle to pull away from Ha rringt on on th e backstretch. Wh en he put a ba ckmarker between them in the chica ne, the race was over. T "Tha t was a gift," McGrath said. "I was fortu nate to ge t pa st so me lapped tr a ff ic a n d k eep T odd (H a rr ing to n) behind me. Everyb od y raced cle an. It was really gratifying to win this." "I blew my las t-la p plan because of so me tra ffic," lam ented Harrin gt on . " It was a great race." Lost in the shuffle was the fact that Brian Livengood had wrapped up the class cha m p io ns h ip w ith his ei g h thpl a ce finis h. He came in with a hu ge lead on McGrath, and althou g h McGrat h did what he cou ld to make it clos e, it w asn't enoug h. At th e end of the six-race seri es, Live ngood finished w i th 154 point s - fo u r more than McGrath. Harringt on was third with 134 points. Harrington had started from the pole position , a spo t he was give n a fter the Ka w a saki Z X-6 of Pe ng ui n Ra cin g Schoo l's Eric Wood was found to produce too much po we r. The num ber-one plate ho lder was forced to the back off the 47-rid er grid. From th e pol e, Harrington bolted, con trolling the race from the front, wit h David Joseph Rose his closest com pany. McGrath made his way to third on the fou rt h lap , closin g u p on Rose and hound ing hi m for a handful of lap s. At the end of the sixth la p and th e beginning of the sevent h lap, McGrat h went fro m th ird to first, wit h Harrington taki ng it back befo re the d ogleg on the seventh. McGra th went around him o n th e w est banking and into th e chicane, with Rose losing touch and eventually fad ing to seve nt h. For the final three lap s, it was stric tly a tw o-rid er race, with Harrington in fro nt on the eighth lap, losing it momentarily, and then taking it back going into turn on e on the ninth lap. The spot wa s his until the final lap , the 11th, wh en McGrath mad e his wa y by, hold in g on the power through the infield and onto the banking. He shouldha ve bee n a sitting duck, but he managed to pull out a healthy lead and was further aided when he managed to stuff his w ay into the chica ne just ahead of a backmark er. That pret ty mu ch d ecided it. McGra th would wi n the race by 1.194 seco nds in 21 minutes, 55.961 seconds at an average speed of 107.128 mp h. Cliffor d's Cycle's Ja mes Milroy Jr . passed Rose on the seve nt h lap to take ov er third , fronting a pack of five riders for a lap or tw o before ed gin g away to a secu re spo t. "We threw this bike together after crash ing yes te rday," Milroy sa id . " It was a m ir acl e to ge t on th is podium tod ay." Fifth was less clear -cut , with a trio of rid ers m ixing it up o n th e fin al lap . Randy Menneng a ca me ou t on top of Val volin e EMGO Suz uki's Gran t Lopez and Wood , who had made it up to sixth on the 10th lap. Lo p ez h ad led o n th e l ath , wi th Wood and Mennen ga getting by in the chicane on that same lap . Mennen ga got back in front into turn one, With Lopez next, then Rose and Wood , with Wood making up a spot a t the finish. After Rose ca m e Livengood, fo llow ed by Ma nny Ma n us utha kis , w ho made up a spot a ft er Byron Barbour went out on the fina l lap. Keith Wilson finished 10th. ,~ Daytona International Speedway Daytona Beach, Florida Results: November 1, 1998 (Round 6 of 6) EBC BRAKE S S PO RT BIKE: 1. David McGrath (Suz ): 2.
