The Malibu-based LXD gro u p produced the event , which featured a land mark $50,000 purse, and brough t ou t the legends o f the burgeoning freeriding mov ement. The podium positions were filled out by SMP's Clifford Adoptante, who picked up $7500, and Fleshgear' s Carey Hart, who collected $5000. LXD is the same compa ny that has produced the FreeRid e Sno wb oa rd C hampi onsh ips and the Vans Trip le Crown of Snowboardi ng . Atte ndance nu mber ed around 6000 - a near-capacity crowd at thi s facility, which is normally known for weekly speed way mot orcycle events during the summertime season. Using a new three-discipline format featuring a flattest-whip contest, a stepup competition, and a F'reeRide expression sess io n, the rid ers showed th ei r skills on a multi-jump cou rse de signed by former AM A 125cc Na tio nal MX Cha mpion Micky Dymond . The evening go t off to a flaming start as Trigger Gumm climbed a jump in the center of the arena to spew flames from his mou th. As the well-worn recording of the national anthem lu rched to a premature stop, Mike Cinqmars was the first of 18 riders to a ttempt to qualify for the FreeRide final even t later in the night. The step-up finals featured eight ride rs qua lified from earlier in the day. Jumping from a small take-off jump up over a larger vertical dirt wall, a bamboo bar was added, to be raised incrementally until the last rider could no longer clear it. After th e sixth "raise," Jeff WiIloh, Mike Jones and Chris Rourke were eliminated, leaving SMP /F&S Su zuki 's Tomm y Clowers to collec t the $1750 bo nus for winn ing the step-up competition. The flattest-whip event also brou ght ou t eight p requa lified riders, w ho would have th e opportunity to shock the crowd wi th th ei r insane, upsid edown whips over the arena's big jump. Each rid er took tw o ru ns, wi th crowd response de termining the winner. After . some truly sick attempts , Hart collected $2500 for the flattes t wh ip ; with Doug Parsons collecting $1000 and Jones collecting $500 as bonuses . The FreeRide Finals provid ed th e cha nce for th e top 20 rid ers to collec t their s ha re of the big $50 ,000 purse, which paid down to 10th position . After Willoh, Ronnie Fais s t, Cinqmars, and Rourke thr ew down the gau ntl et, the biggest moves were yet to come. Adoptante showed he was the master of the fu ll Cordova, pulling off the move twice in his routine. Mixing in a couple of Superman Air moves, lan ding a Front Fender Step, and getting in a Heel Clicker, can-can, and a big Rear Fe n d er Grab e ns u re d t h e " Flyi n' Hawaiian " second place on the podium and $7000 for the night. Ha rt put in a s tro n g performance , starting wit h a Fender Grab and including two No-Hand er/No-Footer moves, a Saran Wrap, a One-Handed Whip and a No-Handed Land er , an d fin ish ing off with a new combo Su per ma n /Fend er Grab. Tha t was good fo r th ird place overall and a 55000 check. The winning ride of the nig h t was also the last. Jones exp loded with a big Cliffhanger, a One-Ha nded Whip, tw o Superman Air moves, a Heel-Clicker, a No-Footed Whip, a Front Fender Grab combined with a No-Handed Lander, another huge Whip (leaving the wooden laun ch ramp already sideways), and finished with an endo over the ba rs at the step-u p jump.
