The Over 50 Novice class was big, and it was Joe Cook who took his B50 to a pair of seconds for th e overa ll w in . The bike, however, e xpi red in th e process of winning, and he had to ride a backup to third in the second mota. Ariz on a ' s Mike Halpin won the first of three hunks of brass, taking th ird and th en passing both Brown a nd Rand y Lewis for the overall. Halpin w on the first Sportsm an 50Dec Expert mot o, but he cou ld n' t ge t by Brown in the seco nd . Tr oy Sma lley, meanwhile , worked in bet w een the two of them for second place. Kay Mann was the toast of the Classic 500cc Novice class, taking home the win on her 1969 BSA 350 with a 3-2 tally over Eugene Crawford's 5-1 a nd Bill Dumas' 2-4. Scott Silvia managed to win both ends of the Over 30 In term ed ia te and 250cc Intermediate con tests for do uble wins on his KX. Ken Burningham took s ome mo re troph ies hom e to Ca nada after win ning th e Premier 500cc In te r media te class ove r Corky Root an d Terry Pratt. Pratt , however. i re tu rned to w in the Over 50 Inter me diate class ove r Lou Siega l and Bob White. Fortu nately for Pratt, Pau l Carruthers isn't ove r 50 yea rs old. Old Ed Meagor proved yo u ca n be old and still win, as he topped the Over 60 Novice class ov er Ha nk Cosio and Rich Mayer . Joel Hansen took his CanAm to fi rs t in the Sportsm an 125 cc Novice cla ss w ith a 1- 2 count o ve r Lawre nce Aug us tine, who was making his racing debut, and Jim Atkins. Hansen repeat ed in th e Sportsman 250cc Novice class , winning bo th motos on a Honda, with Ca rlos Romero seco nd ov er Todd Bad ham and Sco tt Brophy . Rom ero wo uld return to top the Over 30 Novice class, ahead of David Starr and Broph y. Todd Kohlmeister took his Maico 400 to both moto wins in the Over 40 Intermed iat e di vision , with Jerry Winkelbauer turning in a similar pair of twos over Darryl Alc orn, J.P . Morgen a nd Rick Nic holso n.
