After qualifyi ng on the pole, fas test by over a seco nd , the Honda-mounted Ca liforn ian pushed her Honda RS125 straig h t to the front of the 14-rid er HRC Grand Prix by Id emitsu class and never let up. Halfway in , she had ov er four secon ds in hand, and she cruised to victo ry, en di ng the se ve n- la p, 25-mile race with a 5.449-second cushion. She co mpl eted th e rac e in 15 minutes, 22.733 seco nds at a n average speed of 97.224 mph . "I was having fu n," Jackson -Bell said . "I d ecided to run conse rvativ e a t firs t. Vicky Ja cksonBell leads LaVaughn Montgo mery (54) and Greg Esser (26) en rou1eto easily winning the 125cc Grand Prix race. My fas ter tim es were a t the tai l end of the race." Since Ja ckson-B ell w a s ab le to je t awav, all att ention was focused on the fight for seco nd , w h ich was a lso th e fight for the cham pio nship. In the beginnin g, it was Grand stand Cy cle Spor ts' Roland o Q u in te ro in fr ont o f W e st Coast Ra ci n g ' s Lavaughn Mont gomery and Fabweld's G reg Esser, bu t th e o rder was flui d . Montgom er y d rafted by Q uintero int o th e chica ne o n th e seco nd lap, with Qu in te ro taki ng it ba ck b y th e line . Esser go t u p among them on the thi rd lap, th e trio side by sid e at th e line, with Esser riding ha rd in the infi eld to keep up . But it wouldn 't be e nou g h and by the fourth lap Ess er wa s losing touch, leaving the pair in front to se ttle the cha mp io nship between themselves. Qu int ero was mostly in front , with Montgom ery taking the spo t in tum one o n the six th lap , onlv to give it righ t back. Aga in she went by, later on th e sixth lap wit h Qu int ero draft ing by on th e w e st banking , ea rly eno ug h fo r Montgomer y to take it back on the draft into the chicane. The pair swapped aga in on the front, wit h Montgomery stuffing her way by in tu rn o ne , th e two go ing a t it th e wh ole lap, setting up the fina l run to the flag. Montgo mery led out of the chicane as Q uin tero po unced , closing in over the NASCAR tum-fou r tu nn el and inchi ng by to take secon d , and th e champ ions hip - by half a wheel. "These tw o gi rls are tough," Quintero said. "You can nev er underestima te them . I was fo r tu n a te to get past Lavaughn off the d raft. I was looking for the championship, and that's what I go t. Two yea rs in a row of trying, and it paid off." "It' s alwavs nice to ride with Quinte ro, " Montgome ry s a id . It wa s a race that featured exactly one ride r from ou tsid e the lower 48 - Thomas Pfro mm of Bonn, Germany. And it all took place in the cou rse of a weeken d . 'one of which mattered to Shawn Higbee. The Tilley'S H- D/Bu ell rid er won bot h races bv - for this class - astound ing marginsto u neq uivocally claim the haughty title. Higbee wo n the firs t race in so me thi ng of a ru na way for th is class. H is lead was so secu re on the fina l lap that there was no threat of a draft -p ass on th e wa y to th e lin e . Th e margin ove r La ncas ter H -D /Bu ell ' s Rand y Text er w a s 2.943 seco n ds a t the e n d of th e seven-lap , 25-mile race, wh ich he won in 15 minu tes, 33.031 seco nds at an avera ge speed of 96.151 mph. It seeme d like a lot - until the second race. Th at o ne he won by an unheard -of 10.574 seconds , having brok en the draft of his 17 pursuers ea rly on and then rid ing his ow n race to the d ouble victory. "1 never thou ght I'd win two her e at Dayt ona ," H igb ee sai d. "I s ta rted th e I ra ce with th e a tt itu de to fini sh w ell en ou gh to wi n th e World cup. Once I got ou t front, I just kept pushing it." Second w ent to NASB H -D Twin Sports number-on e plate hold er Billy Graef, who'd successfu llv d efended his titl e in Saturday' s race. And Mike Ciccotto, who cras hed ou t of the first race while running a t the fro n t of the field , was third on the Stevens Racing /WKR Ent erp rises Harl ey. Fourth wen t to La n ca st e r HD/Buell's Rand y Texter, w hich, combined wit h his second in the first race, gave him second overall, one in front of Graef. Miller Electrical Constructio n's Jess Roed er was fifth. Stevens Raci ng' s Mike Ciccotlo got the ju m p on the field in the first race, followed in qu ick orde r by Hal's H-D's Billy Graef, Tilley' S H-D /Buell's Shawn Hi gb ee, Lancaster H-D /Bu ell' s Randy Texter, and Michael Barnes, filling in for the disqu alified David Esto k on the Bartel's Harl ey-Davidson 883. . Nea ring the end of the first lap, Timoth y John son and C h r is Dem opoul os cras hed in the chicane, brin ging out the red flag. Neither wou ld make the re start. Tha t would go to Texter, Gra ef, Higbee and Cic co tto, th e top four nearly making a clean break fro m the now 21rider field until th ey were suddenl y cau ght by Dayt on a Harl ey-David son's Richie Morris goi ng into th e chicane. Braking hard and using the d raft, Morris wen t from fifth to firs t and the n to seco nd , setlling in am on g the lead ers. Ciccotto would lead at the start-finish line , wit h Mo rri s second , and Higbee third in front of Miller's Electrical Construction 's Jess Roed er, the 1998 HarleyDavid son 883 Dirt Track C ha mpion, who was followed bv Graef and Texter. Roeder too k the lea d going onto the bankin g , wi th H igbee takin g his first shot at the poi nt on the 3000-foot backstretch a nd hold ing it across the stripe; Roeder was next, followed bv Graef and Ciccotto. ' Roed er liked it ou t front, so he went back there wi th an agg ress ive move into tum one, moving Higbee back one position to just in front of Ciccotto. bu t not for lon g . Higb ee returned th e favor, onl y to get shu ffled back going into the chicane, with Ciccotto in third in front of Texter and Graef, the trio just behind the top five. Fou r wide ending the third lap, Higbee eme rged out fron t, with Roed er sec- , ond , Texter and Ciccott o next, and then Gra ef and Morri s. ow it appeared that Higbee had control, hold in g the spot until the sixth lap, w hen he lost it going int o tum one after getting caug ht up by the pursuing trio.
