I his was Billy Graef's class. After qualifyin g on the p ole for th e Bu ell Lig h tn ing ra ce , w it h mo re than a six-tenths-of-a-second cushion, the Sheb oygan, Wiscon sin, ride r pu t his Hal 's H-D Buell to the front of the 16-rid er class and led all the wav. Th e margin of vict ory for his third wi n in th e se ries w a s 3.606 second s, which d oesn 't acc u ra te ly describe his dom inan ce. The three win s helped him to the title, by a comfor tab le 22 points over Valley Racing's Bria n Conley, wh o was fourth today . . "It kind of went the way I plann ed ," Graef said . "I just wanted to get off the lin e firs t and try to get a wa y. I got a good start and every thing was clicking . The bik e just ran flawless." G raef co m p leted the sev en-lap, 25mile race in 14 minutes, 55.960 seconds , at an aver age speed of 100.129 mph. Graef had company early in the race a s H arley-Da vid son of Greensboro ' s Dave McGrath too k off in pu rsuit of the front-ru nner. Graef started to edge away and , by the third lap, it was clear w ho th e win ner w ould be .
