Bulto ta le AH RMAgeddon I'm sure I spe ak for Bultaco en thusi asts ev erywhere when I say thank you to Dennis oyes for writing his thoughtful tribute to the late Fra ncisco Xavier Bulto (" How!," Issue 1140, October 14). As w ebmaster for the world' s largest In ternet si te for Bultaco owners, I was deluged w it h e-mail from around the world telling me of Don Pa co ' s passing in early August. Many of m y correspond ents sent me obituary clipp ings from the Spanis h media, but it was Mr. Noyes' article about the great founder of Bultaco that reall y described thi s res pected man th e be st. Th e r em i n is ce n ce s D ennis shar ed about brave spo r ts men li ke Ra m o n Torras also brought' back many memories. Tha nk yo u, Cycle News a nd Dennis Noyes, for th is wonderfu l piece of jou rnalism . Doug Zielke Coquitlam, BC, Canada As an AH RMA member and motocross competitor, I would like to respond to th e a r ti cle " A gatheri ng of heroes " (Issue 1140, O ctober 14). I have talked wit h Mr. Doughty at AHRM/>. rac es and respec t both his riding ability and business acumen. I also applaud Dou ghty' S efforts in orga nizi ng The lro n m en of Motocross Charity Banque t and the Vintage Iron World Championships to provide cha ritable su ppo rt for the Feed The Children Foundation. H owever, I feel it is necessary to comment on Dou g hty ' S re s p ons e to yo u r questions regarding the vintage co m m u n it y an d AHRMA mo tocross . Doughty'S answers seem to fo llow a co m mon thread : "O ne of th e th in gs I thin k has hap pened wi th vintage racin g is tha t it is so overregu la ted ... too mu ch hair-spli ttin g... guys go to the races w ith a level of anxiety abou t their bik e eligibility ... a lo t of co ntroversy about how those post-'75 bikes we re goi ng to tea r up the tracks... a downside to Evolution racing was that those riders in their 30s were going to be aggressive, they were go ing to co me into our semi-sedate sport and ruin the field ...thei r motocross is pretty firml y held by Dick Mann and he subscribes to only one theory and that is that af ter 1974, with the advent of long-travel suspension, the spo rt was no lon ger the spo rt he felt was worth p reserving..."etc. AHRMA mo tocross has "evolved" as a result of input from dozens, if not hundred s , of individu als - co m p e t it o rs, trustees, offic ers, and commi ttee mem bers. Dick Mann doesn' t seem to ha ve any mo re th an one member's input on the rules m a kin g q uo tie n t. As o ne o f thre individ uals on the Mo tocross Rules e and Eligibility Co m mi ttee, Mann's decisions are held acco untable to the mem bership a t large and seem to be cons istent with general membership consens us . AHRMA vinta ge racing is not overregul at ed , but it is regulated . The cu rre nt structu re calls for 15 classes, both machi neand rid er-specific; and wit hin each of the 15 classes is a subd ivision for rider "ability" - Novice, Intermediate and Expert. As such, with 45 different catego ries, scheduling and scoring at any AHRMA ational or regional even t is quite a chore. Venu es like Dayt ona Bike Week, Mid-Ohio and Steamboa t Springs draw entries from all over the world; in excess of 400 entries must be accommodated, aU for a one-day even t. To my thinking, that's the reason th e Evol ut ion class is not incl u ded in AH RMA mot ocro ss - th er e are [us tso · TIl Bultaco website am bt found at the followe ing address:http://www.members.home.llet/ jzzielke/bllltaco.htm...Editor. The U.S. Open of SX After read ing the letters in Cycle News, I felt I had to comment on them. First of all , Kevin Sm yth's lett er is his o pi nion. And he has every right to say what he th inks. But I do have one or tw o qu estions for him. First, if he w as at the event, how does he know what the TV interviews looked like? Second , if he was there, how come he did n ot s ee th e jumbo sc reens that w ere showing th e race as the rid ers went into the tu nnel? My o pi nion, a nd I am en titled to have one, is that maybe he was at another race. In regards to the second letter from Wade Wallace, I have one qu est ion: Do yo u h av e an y clu e w here Jer em y McGrath w as a t th e sta rt of Su nday's fin al ? H e passed man y ot he r rid er s en route to his victory . As a m embe r o f th e a nno u nci ng team, I enjoyed the whole show - top to bott om - and we had a g rea t time with th e fans . Th is wa s a g rea t even t fo r American Supercros s a n d m ot ocro ss ra cing. To be in the mo st beautiful ar ena and casino resort at th e MGM Grand, to showc ase ou r sport, was importa nt to the future of our sport. I hope that all of yo u w ho were th ere enjoyed the sho w, becau se Rick Johnson and I enjoyed calling it for yo u . Larry aston Los Angles, CA many dayligh t hours, so few paid and volunteer personnel, etc. For Doughty to state that the regulati o n s are " hair-splitting," o r that AH RMA MX riders are "sem i-sed ate" or that post-'75 bikes will tear up the track, or that riders have a "level of anxiety" concerning their bike eligibility, or that D ick M ann holds some tyrannical su p re macy over A H RMA mo tocross is just not so . Rick Bley Thebleys @twave.net Wanting Project 2000 As I see it, Project 2000 sho uld be impleme nted next yea r an d we shouldn't wait until the year 2000. In the 1950s, m y w ife and I rod e Triumph m oto rcycl es a nd w ould go to Ascot Par k in Los Angeles and yell for Triumph rid er s to w in . In the '60s, we sw itche d to Harleys and even traveled to Dayt ona to cheer o n Ca l Raybo rn in 1968. Wh en Ray born a nd his H a rl ey won, we called home to friends who still rode Trium phs to gloat. [t was grea t fun': No w all we have are Harl evs in dirt track racin g - w hat's the sport in that? On September 28 this year, we went to the Sacra men to Mile (yes, we are still riding bikes and going to races) and I found myself pulling for Rich King and his Hond a - something that is blasphemy for a Ha rley rider. When Harley wi ns the n umber-o ne plate this year, what is there go ing to be to brag abou t - that the Ha rley factor y beat a bu nch of priva teers (and this is in no way m ea n t to take anythi ng away fro m Scott Parker' s rid ing ability)? Just thi nk how exci ting it would be to go to the races again and cheer for the brand of b ike yo u rid e. If yo u r brand wins, yo u can bra g abo ut it. If you lose, yo u get to come back next week and try again. Tell the power s to be to get a grip or w e're g o ing to los e one o f the most exciting forms of ra cin g in th e w o rld. Could th e proble m b e that Har le y doesn' t have a com pe titive 1000cc bike? Dan Spence Yu ba City, CA Le t te rs t o t he e d ito r sh o u ld be se n t to Voices, Cycle News, P.O.
