Those other gu ys, nam ely KTM rid ers Rich Lafferty and Bill Atkinson, each posted four-point cards in tight scoring. Filling out the podium, Atkinson ed ged Lafferty w ith 233 seconds to claim the num be r-t w o s eed . Laffe rt y fini shed third overall with a 4/244 card . It was a we t and rainy day, with fairly cons tan t showers and the occasio nal downpour. While it might've been a tou gh day on goggles, there was, in fact, aw esome traction in the sandy trails through the pine forests that made up the bulk of the co u rse. Sta rti ng from the New Jersey ORV park in Chatsworth, the club laid ou t a 75-mile trail that included a midd ay gas break back at the star t area. The majori ty of the miles covered was during the mo rning loop, which in cluded two special tests, the first more tha n 10 miles lon g. Des p ite its len gth, the top five scores in the section came thr ou gh wit hin a seven-second span, each droppi ng one poin t. It was in the next sec tion, however, that Hoess ran into trouble. As it was a sectio n tha t b e g an wi thout a check-in, riders who played it stra ight had tro ubl e making the checkout. Hoess carded a poi nt, while lafferty , A tki n so n, Crai g Shenigo , Fr ank Vanaman and Dave Maco all zeroed the check. In the afternoon, things started going H oess' way . In two a fternoon tests, Hoess set benchmark scores, posting 1-0 . through the two sectio ns and picking up a point on the competition in each test. A handful of other top riders tried but couldn't compete, the best carding 2-1 tallies for the aftern oo n tests . With that , Hoess not on ly overcame his mo rn ing tally but secured his 11th endu ro ove rall win of the season, finishing wi th a 3 I 182 score. In additio n to the fou rs tallied by Atkinso n and Lafferty, w ho fin ished second and third overall, respectively, KTM 300 pilot Frank Vana man also pu t u p good nu m b e rs, fi nishi ng wit h a 4 /269 sco re to ea rn th e High Point A trophy.
