The win is Wood's seco nd consecutive win at the Buck horn, and it puts him in to the 1998 series lead. The Fox/I-800-CYCLE GEAR-sponso red Wood d ro p ped 13.320 po ints o n the 86-m ile, tw o-loop cou rse, which featured so me tough new tra ils that were I recently crea te d by the Red di ng Di rt Rid ers' co u rse c rew, led by Duay ne Lou cks. " It wa s obvi ous they (the RDR) put a lot of wo rk in to mak ing the new trail s so , challenging , interesting and fu n for us," Wood sa id . Set at 24 mph, riders dropped quickly d own , the tig ht, roc ky trail into an area called )"The Black Hole." Rou te speeds varied between 18 and r 30 m ph over the first 46 miles of tight J s in g le - tra ck , lo o se -sh al e hills , Jeep , road s, cree k cross ings, and wi nding, ., manzani ta-cro w ded trails. 1 An ot h e r trai l - the " Bu t tpu cker Downhill," a long, wind ing section with ' ~ a cha llengi ng creek crossing at th e bot1 tom - tested the timekeeping skills of the rid ers. A 30- mi n u te brea k a t the gas stop gave riders tim e to co m p a re scores, swa p s to ries, change dust-plugged a ir filters, and re-energize. While at ga s, se ve ral rider s complimented Ga lford and Stowe on how we ll they were rid ing. " It was g rea t hearing ho w cool w e looked when we passed other rid ers," Stowe said . "Someone sa id we looked like a choo-choo train." Galford a nd Stowe were rid ing o n the sa me minute and passed each other several tim es. "Tim and I battled all day," Galford said . Abou t 10 miles int o the seco nd loop, rid ers we re introd uc ed to a nothe r new trail - "Th e Ravine." It led them th ro ugh . a thickly wooded se ction of the forest. "It actually got p ret ty d ark through there, bu t it wa s great," Wood said.
