Malherbe masters Castaic MX By Greg Robertson CASfAIC, CA, SEPT. 25 In w hat may be the last -ever SSC Friday night motocr oss at Castaic Lake (a t leas t for a w hile), YZ250-mounted Mike Malherbe' used a pair of good sta rts to claim the 250cc Beginner -class win. The fa ns on ha nd w ere trea ted to a jum p co ntest at the ha lfw ay poin t in the night 's racing progr am. Co lin Morriso n, Mike Meado w s and Sha ne Tr ittler did thei r bes t freesty le move s, much to the deligh t 01 the crowd. Shortly ther eaf ter, a pla q ue was presented to Tri ttl er (w ho is the SSC promo ter) by friends, s ponso rs and track personnel in appreciation of the five years of racing he has o rganized at the Castaic facility . Mal herbe would start out his first mot o on th e right foo t, with a holesbot o ver John Klier and Harri n Hobb ick. Klie r would lose second p lace to Hobbick on the back st raig ht o n lap tw o. A sho rt time later, Hobb ick was all ove r Mal he rbe a nd block-passed him coming ou t of a tu m for the lead . Hob bick continued on for the wi n o ver Malherbe a nd Sean Ireland , w ho kept passi ng pe o ple from his last-pla ce s ta r t to nab third . Mal herbe wa s q uickes t out of th e ga te in moto two to lead Klier by five seco nds after a sing le lap. Klier w en t down and collected Hobbick in the process. Mal herbe suddenly had a 10· second cushion . which he would enjoy u p un til the ch t.>ekers fell. Jay Bagge ca me from ou t of the pa ck to hold off Ireland for the runner-up position and claim seco nd over all on a 4-2 score. Irl"la nd 's 3-3 edged out Ho bbick' s 1-5 lor third overall. Steve Harbiso n co llected the 12.CJcc 'Begi nner wi n, bu t it wasn' t easy.
