By the third lap, Pocor obba had pu t som e breathing room bet ween himself a nd Gaylord . Watson had settled into thir d with a thr e e-second cus hion ove r the battle for four th. Ron Hoyas had had eno ugh of the roost from the Pr id e m o re' s Yamaha fo u r-stroke, a nd he za pped him in the tight left- hand corner after the fam ous Lakocco Leap jump. Abbott caug ht and pa ssed Pridemore on the fourth lap to take over fifth. Pocorobba stay ed out fro n t a nd cruised with a t h ree-se cond a d va ntage ov er Gaylord, who in turn had 10 ~ond s over Watson. Boyas thought the fourt h spot was his, but Abbott was charging the last lap and passed him for fourth. Gavlo rd took th e moto- h-vo ho leshot , with joshu'; Steel st"Cund, Pocorobba third , Wa tson fo urth and Ke v in Be ll fi fth . Gay lo rd an d POrorobba were side bv side o\·er la Rocco Leap.
