Leivan back on track with Smithville HS win By Frank Le lvan SMITHVILLE, MO, sm. 13 After an injury-ind uce absence, it took just two 'I:! events for five-ti me and defe ndi ng M issouri Hare Scram b les Cha m p io n' Steve Leivan to climb his way b.1ck up to the top of the podium. Leivan came ou t on top of a racelong d uel with season-lo ng points leader Mik e Windmann by making the fina l pass of the day with three miles left in the rain·soa ked event. \Nhile he lp ing to promote an event in early July, Leivan had taken a spill, breakin g his len wrist a nd spra ining his right wrist. Now, three months Iatl'r , Leiva n sa id: "My arms fl.Cl rea lly ' goo d again and I am able to push as hard as I can and not feel a ny pain. I have bt.>cn putting a lot of time in on the bike to gl't my end ur<1 nce an d tim ing back. I gUl.~S tha t I have found it." Rai n bt. gan to fall on the Smithvillt.~ Lake race course abo ut an hour before the sta rt of ro und 13 o f th e M isso uri H are Scramb les C hampionsh ip. making the tra il so sli ppery and tricky that nearl y half of the 263 entrants would fail to complete even a single la p. Again. Chris Nesbitt new into the lead of the 12-rid er AA class. Leiva n an d Chris Ca plinger elbowed each other throu gh the first three turns wh ile arguing over seco nd , wit h Leiva n ge tti ng the nod . It took Leivan less than a quart er of a mile to move aro un d Nesbitt and begin to pull away. Despite falling himself and then stop ping for fresh goggles at the co ncl us ion of th e fi rs t of fou r laps, Leiva n held a IS-second lead ove r Wind mann, who had come fro m way bac k o n a borrowed bike. . Te n seco nd s beh in d Wind m ann ca me th e Yama ha of Tanner Eng land. with early lead er Nesb itt (w ho, like al mo s t everyone else , was fighting visio n problems) another 20 ticks back. jeff Lappe, as usual. was in contro l of the A class on his KTM 125 w hile ru nni ng in fifth o verall on ad justed time. Mid wa y through the second lap - which had cha nged quite a bit from the firs t, with the tra il littered with broken bikes o r riders - Windmann ca ug h t u p to Leivan a nd made his bid for the lead . Both riders were able to work th rou gh the worst bottleneck ne ar mile seven with little diffi cul ty a nd cruised in to the pits together after lap two. Windmann took o n a s plash of fue l and fresh goggles whil e Leivan opted for the latter as the two exited pit row with more than a min uteand-a- ha lf lead ove r Dan Burgard, who - in his first race as an AA rider · had tak en over third. Windmann sta yed glued to L..~ van 's rear tire for the first half of the third lap befone taking the lead position back when the lead ers cnco u n· tered several lapped riders at the first bottleneck section. England had taken ove r con trol of third , in what wa s to be the best ride of his ca ree r. Gon e from con tention were early fron t-runners Nt.~bitt, who bent his rear-brak e pedal back to the footpeg on the second lap, and Burgard, who also suffem :! with prob lems. Both riders wou ld, however, co m p le te the event - with Bu rgard co m ing h ome 13th while Nesbitt st rugg led hom e in 15th. Right before the end of lap thRoe, Wind man n go t a little sideways in a slick woods st.>ction and Leivan retook the lead . Leh"an oph.. d to stop for > goggles in the pits, while Wind ma nn di d not an d he n~took the lead . These two had dis ta nced themse lve s fro m the res t of th e pack by mo re than six minutes. Wind mann put his hea d down an d put so me distance on Leiva n in the tightes t St.'Ction of the tiai l. When the1 reached the bo ttlenc'Ck for the final time , Leivan had closed the ga p a nd fo l· lo wt..--d Windmann th rough a rerout ed st.Ctio n. " With abo u t th ree miles left in the race . Wind ma nn chose an a lterna te line th rou gh a wcxx.ied section while Leivan 'stuck to the original trail. When t hey met a gain, Leivan was leading . Wind mann, meanwhile, was having more vision problems - a muddy leaf stuck over his right eye - and Leivan was able to pull clea r. . With vi rtually no traffic to contend wi th , Leivan stayed smooth a nd up right a nd held his lead to the end, earning his sixth overall of the season on his SCR/Yamaha / Dunlop / Answerbacked mo un t. Aga in, Wind mann was second. England complet ed his best-ever ride by takin g the final pod ium spot.
