VDTRA Pro-Am National Dirt Track series Round 1 :Muskogee Expo Fairgrounds Speedway 4 Fike is ~ top Master ~ ~ By Mike Zbrozek MUSKOGEE, OK, SEPT. 19 s th e VDTRA Pro-Am se as o n wound down with its next-to- last round , th e Mu skogee Half Mile , half of th e champion ship chases were still up for g rabs and rema ined hotly contested . The closes t of those title chases was in the Pro Mast ers class, in which current class cha m p ion John Fike was attempting to hold off the challenge of Johnny Isaacs . . Isaacs has been strong all year in the races in which he's finished, and he held the points lead in bo th the Pro Mas ters A and Pro 600cc class coming in to Muskogee . The words "in whi ch he's finished " are impo rtant, becau se at Muskogee he saw h is poin ts lea d evapora te as h is hy brid BSA gro und to a halt on the final lap of the Pro Masters final. That handed the race 'win to Bill Snyder, wit h Fike ridi ng his BSA twin in to second place and in to the poin ts lead . . But while Pike's stro ng finis h in the Pro Master s class was enoug h to allow him to ga in on Isaacs in Pro Mas ters, he also su ffered a bit of bad luck wh en his big BSA seized in the closing laps of the Pro Twin main. The non finish d ropped him down to third in the cham pionship point standings. In th at ra ce, Snyder again mad e a fin e s ho w in g, b rin g ing his Regina Chain /Shoei-sponsored mach in e to the checkered flag in second, behind runaway winner Mar k Gibson on his Diversified Body & Paint /South City Cycles s p o ns o r ed mo unt. Th e win e a rn e d Gibson his second strai ght Pro Twin Championship. Fike, meanwhil e, now has only a slim chance of movin g back int o the seco nd spot, ahea d of Sny der, with only the Las Vegas round of the series rem ain ing on October 4. With Snyder some 13 po ints in fr on t of him , th is w ill be no sma ll cha llenge for Fike. In y et a no t her closely cont ested p oints batt le, Masters Am at eur rid er Charley . Rap er kept hi s 500cc Yamaha single on the boil to overcome an earl y red -flag restart, and a midrace challen ge from Jerry Hinds to tak e the win and the clas s .points lead . Montana 's Ken Alla man turned in one of hi s best performances of the year as he kept a close tail on Hinds to finish a solid third. The red flag had been brought out on the second la p wh en Fr ed Schr i t t cr as he d his ' XR750. Fortunately, he escaped without in jury - th ou gh the sa me co u ld n't be said of the big Harl ey. Th e Open Twin Am at eur class has bee n good all year, with class warrior s Bill Stephens , Ken Slota, Bud Osantowski, Schritt, Earl E. Smith, Hin d s, Fred Cuba, Ron Ston e and a ho st of othe rs runn ing wheel to w he el , wee k a fte r week. Whil e Stephe ns established himself as the man to beat early in the year with seve ra l N a tio nal p oint wi ns, VDTRA new boy Slot a tu rn ed things around midseason, keeping the dashing Stephens well within sight for top hon ors at any giv en Na tional. An other midseason' starter, Earnest "Bud" Osa nto wski, has been a storme r in this class as well, often roaring his XR to the front of the pack, hay bal es flying , right hand tugging firmly at the throttle. But unfortu nately Osa ntowski's season ground to a halt at th e J&P Promotions Antique Mot orcycle Races a t Da venport, Iowa, o ver La bo r Da y w e ek end as h e s usta in ed a seaso n-en d ing in jury th at required a hospital stay: Desp ite the fact that Schritt and Osantowski we re missing from th e night's Open Tw in main event , th e fans s till go t th eir m on ey' s wo rth as Slota raced his Trium ph to the early lead, w ith Step he ns, V DTRA ve tera n Rocky Cur ry , Smith a n d Hind s pu shing each other on every lap. In ye t an o ther cl ose ch a se, Smith rode a flawl ess race in the 600cc Amate ur m ai n to hold back th e multip le charges of class point leader Jeff Ga rlach Sr. to take the win .
