(Above) Kevin Graham (5) sneaks up on Rad Greaves (70) at the GLRRA's ninth round, held at Grattan Raceway. (Left) Larry Gessner (4N) grabs the holeshot over Todd Marshall (315) and Scottie Shipley (22) In the Over 30 A division at round nine of the WintersiAmway Team Carolina Ultra Series. Hovis managed to recover in time to take fifth. In the 80cc 02-13) class, Shoaf looked to have control going into the fin al moto, af ter taking the win in moto one. But fellow Suzuki rider Matt Miller had ot he r pla ns and took the second-moto win - which, combined with his second in mo to one, gave him the hard-fought overall. Shoaf took home seco nd with his 1-2 scores. Hovis mad e up for his poor performance in the Supermini class and garn ered third overall wi th his consistent 3-3 finishes. The Over 30 A class also had its share of action. Jeffersonville, Ind iana's Larry Gess ner made the most of his long trek and shot ou t to an early lead in the first moto. Suzuki of Gastoni a /Tecnosel / Reikon's Billy Liles , DASCO's Scottie Shipley, Suzuki of Ga ston ia / Bak er' s Cycles' Joel Baker and Kawasaki-mounted Alan Painter w er e all close behind. Liles wa s pushi ng to ge t a rou nd Ges sner earlv on, but the KTM rider wa s goi ng tohave none of tha t and held off all of the Morgant o n, No rth Caroli na , rider's ad vances. As the moto drew to a clo se , Liles made a valian t effo rt, but Gessner held fast for the w in. Liles took the runner-up position, and the rest of the top five rem ained unchanged . Moto two proved to be just as excitin g a s the first , with Ges sn er aga in grabbing the early lead. Liles, Honda rider James Morris, Shipley and Baker ga ve chase. Once again the two frontrunners se t a pace tha t too k th em fa r away from the rest of the pack. Liles made an early miscue, all owing Gessner to open a small lead. Thi s was all the advantage the KTM rider needed to tak e the second-moto win and the overa ll. Liles r ecov ered fo r seco n d and made a charge for the lead but ran out of time. Baker finally came to terms with th e w indi n g Birch Creek facility a nd too k thi rd fro m local home town rid er Sh ip ley on the final la p . Mo rris filled out the top five. The Over 40 division saw local Virginia rider Sonny Mitchell taking home .d ou ble moto wins. Mit ch ell u sed h is track experience to his advantage each time ou t, quickly establishing a lea d , never to be headed . Su zuki of Casto- nia 's Carl Vargo took the runner-up positi on with his 3-2 sco res , tak in g th e tie br eaker by way of his better mot o fini sh in moto tw o over Hond a rid er Donald Mays [r., who went 2-3 to take I~ the final podium position.
