Keith Martin, racing Vinta ge Three aboard his Triumph 750, grabbed a quick holeshot. but Chris Fox on his fast Yamaha SR500 wa s in front at the end of the first lap. Martin repassed for the lead during lap tw o a nd it wa s all Martin for th e res t of the race, and he turned a low 1:25 in the proc~s. Starting slow bu t moving u p, Keith Hert ell, on his RD350, passed Fox on lap six and finished more tha n 6.79 se conds behind Ma rtin 's Triumph. Fox rounded out the podium for Vintage Three . On ly two machines were entered in Vintage Five. H o w e ve r, Doug Tr a y lor' s RZ3S0 developed en gine problems and he was out for the res t of the da y. This allowed Bruce Jackson to rid e his Ascot sao to the checkered flag all alon e. Martin also took the Vintage Four win. N ext up was Formula RD an d Formula 500. As the green flag dropped, Chris Fox launched off to an unchallenged victory, turning a fast lap of 1:25.10. Michael Langley, aboard another SR500, wound u p second, mo re tha n 22 seconds behind Fox. Youngster Blake Loehr, riding his Ascot-powered "Thurnpenstein,' filled out the podium for Form ula SOl The Formula RDs we re left behi nd to crawl off the start - all three entries apparently had mot or probl ems . As their first lap was com plete, Richard Hill pulled int o th e" p its wit h a bl o wn bottom end, a nd Keith H ertell pulled in as w ell, wi th electrica l gremli ns . Shank continued to race aggres sively , a nd o nce he ca ug ht up to Mea gher, a very intense battle for second ensued . Shank kept a t it and after a full lap of mo tocross combat he overtook Meag her. O ut fro nt, Andris o p e n ed up h is Yamaha YZ400 a nd raced away unchalle nged, clicking off the remaining laps flawlessly to take the mote win. Shank wa s second, followed by Meagher. Stapleton came on strong late in the race to eventua lly grab fourth, with Loderrneier ro unding out th e top fiv e, foll o w ed by Blair, Windham and Cock. Cook grabbed th e holeshot in the seco nd mot o, with Andris, Meagher, Shank and Windham in tow, bu t Andris took ove r the lead in the next co mer. By the end of the first lap, Meagher and Shank had also passed Cook, dropping him to fourt h, with Win dham rou nding out the top five. Second -p laced Meag her stayed close to the leader for several laps, but by mid race A ndris had pulled away to bui ld a co mfortable lead. Sha n k sha dowed Mea gher, lookin g for a way past, wi th Cook and Wi ndham also right ther e in the hunt. Suddenly Shank took a spill, and he retired from the race. With Sha nk out, Coo k mo ved u p to th ird p lace, w it h Windha m in fo urth . M ean wh ile , Lodermeier w ~ mo vin g u p after a last- place star t, an d in the closing laps Lodermeier passed Blair an d Stapleton to ca pt ure fifth. A lo t of th e jumps re ta ined th eir he ight for this race, which is pa rt of the Spring Creek Super Series, with two ro unds left to go in tha t series for 1998_ At the start of the first moto in the Vet A class, it looked as thou g h Scott Steinle wo uld grab the holeshot o n his big, Sinisa lo /Scott /CTI / Dale's /LCR/Durelle Racing /GK Photo-backed CRSOO_Gates held the gas open on his CR250 to stea l the lead through turn o ne, with Steinle second, Jim Scott third and Bryan Hu nt fourth. After the sand-wash section, however, Gates apparently went down, as Hu nt ernerge>d the leader, wi th Stdnle, Scott, Bill Engstrom an d Dan l uloff following, in that order, and Ga tes emerging in sev· enth place in the 13-rider field. By the end of. the second la p, however, Gates .....as in th ird' nd a putting the pres sure o n Steinle in second, with Hunt leading. Gat ..."S ma de the pass o n Steinle early on lap thr ee and set his sig hts on the·leader . By the end of the third lap, Gates and Steinle had displaced Hunt for the top two spots; the trio was we ll ahead of the res t of the pac l:- Ga tes, Steinle and Hunt finis h...orl in tha t order in the malo, with : luloff fourth an d Scott fifth. Moto two saw Steinle out front off the sta rt, usin g his big-bore advantage o n Millville' s lon g sta rt straig ht, wi th Engstrom , Hunt an d the res t of the field trailin g. After tw o laps, Ga tes was in co ntrol of t he lead and Steinle was in second, but he had a loose ha nd lebar, whi ch slo wed him down and dropped him back to 10th at malo's end . That meant good luck fo r Scott: He inherited second plac e, which he wou ld carry to th e finish lin e, be hind Ga tes . SEPT. 20 , Gatorbac k Cyde Park p layed host to roun d one of th e Unli m ited Spo r ts 16th an nual Florida State Mo tocross Cha mpionship Go ld Cup Series . jus t over 400 riders from eig h t sta tes attend ed the o pe ni ng ro und to co m pe te fo r Kawasak i, Suzuki and Yamaha co nti nge ncies. Mo to XXXbacke"d Paul Currie topped the 12Sec Pro dass o n this fine d ay of racing, u sing a 2-1 ta lly to take home the lion 's share of the purse. In the first 125cc Pro mot a, Ron nie Renner led the field into tum o ne, with Currie, Marcus Ped rero, Tyson Hadsell and J.B. Ball ard follo w ing. Renner mad e good use of his ho les hot an d qu ickly opened a three-second lead over Currie. C urrie cloSl.>d the gap on Renner over the next few laps, a nd Balla rd fell , moving Mike Stevenson into fifth . With two laps to go, Currie was gl ued to Ren ner's rear fender and look ing for away to pass. Renner hel d off Cu rr ie's attack to sco re th e slim mota win . C u r rie, Pedrero, Hadsell a nd Stevenson rounded o u t the to p five _ Renn er aga in fou nd himself o ut fro nt at the sta rt of race two, with C urrie giving chase. Ballar d, Hadsell and Pedrero brought up the chase group. Currie ho unded Renner for th ree circuits and then dived underneath Renner in the a lligator-pit tu rn before the up hill finish. As the two fron t-runners exited the tum an d raced. up the hill, C urrie drifted over on Renner to mo ve in to the lea d . Currie led the next two laps to take the mot o an d the overa ll wi n; Renner, Ballard, Hadsell a nd p...>drero rounded out the top five places. Jason Thom as traded in his KX for a YZ and p osted a 1-1 mot o sweep to wi n the 250cc Pro d ass. Jaso n Fink led the JO-rider fie ld for the first four laps , until Th omas made his way by Kenny Yoho and Fink on lap five to sco re the wi n . At the flag, Th o mas picked u p the mo to win over Fink , Yoho and Ricky Hampshire. Thomas picked up where he left off in moto o ne as he co ntro lled the race to ta ke the win, but
