G I California Fall Series North, Round 2 F By Jim and Valer ie Enos TURLOCK, CA, SEPT. 27 u s ty Ho llan d star ted r ig ht where he left off - with ano ther clean sweep of both the 125 and 250cc Pro classes at the seco nd round of the GFI California Fall Series, sponsored by MSR and Yamaha of Modesto. After swee pi ng both cla sse s a t ro u n d o ne, h eld at Hollister, thi s tim e the se tti ng was Oatfi eld Raceway . Holland found the technical track to h is li kin g even though m ediocre starts in both races saw the Hond a rider working hard for the wins. With a single-20-minu te-moto format, the AMP -prepped track was at its finest, challen ging the full fie ld of Pros with plenty of doubles, tripl es and a w hoop sect ion that gave the 350-pl us riders in atten da nce fits. The 125cc Pro class race saw Team Gr een / Axo /FMF-backed Jeff Northrop ta ke the ho lesho t with Ya ma ha of Mo desto /Goa t /JN Innovat ion s-b acked Dan Palad ino in tow. Paladino mad e the move fo r the le a d w ith a le ft- hand inside-line p ass on Northrop . Holla nd w as ba ck in fo urth off th e s ta r t and quickly passed Jeff Pestana for third and set his sigh ts on Northrop . As th e tw o we nt over the spectacu lar step-up jump si de by side, Holland nea rly clipped No rthrop with a rea r-tire whip tha t had t he crowd on edge. With no co n tact, Holland moved ahead to secure second . But a subsequen t off-track excursion by Holland just befo re the triple on the next la p' gave Nor thro p an o pen d o or to retake seco nd . However, tw o turns later , H oll and struck back as No rth rop go t hung up in a left-han d er beh ind front-runner Paladino . Holl and seized the oppo rtu nity and pa ssed North ro p w ith a n ou ts ide line. Although Palad in o barely held off Holland in th e ord ea l, th e upcoming whoops wo uld cha nge that as Holland motored right through th em and in to the lead . Northrop w as s till on th e move in third un til a crash ended his day early. I By the halfway po int, Pe stana had made his wa y up to third, with Nathan Woods and Rich ard Step he ns in tow. Pestana then mad e a power pass on Paladino in th e w hoop section to secu re seco nd . With the race coming to a close, Pestana ap pea red to still have so mething left down deep as he sta rted reeling in Ho lland . But when Ho lland exited the whoop section, he looked over his shoulder to see that Pestana was a bit too close for comfort and he turned it up a no tch. Pestana ma tched him turn for turn, jump for jump, but ran out of tim e and h ad to se tt le for a welld eserved se cond behind w inner Holland. Paladino fini shed thi rd, followed by Woods and Stephens. "I was catching Rust y (H olland) at th e end but had trouble passing early on," Pes tana said . "Th e track is pretty one-lined, making it hard to pa ss." The firs t 250cc Pro rac e started off with Nor th rop aga in taking t he ho les hot, Nort hrop had looked fas t in practice on his 250 bu t a crash jus t a few turns lat er p u t h im at the back of th e pack. With tha t, Palad ino took the lead and had the challen ge of kee ping Holl and , temporaril y back in fou rth after a mi dp ack sta rt, be hi nd h im . Holl and firs t ma de h is way pas t Travis Ma rks and th en reeled in Yamaha -m o u nted Zeb Arms tro ng . . Paladino did his best disappearing act and was rid ing smooth ly but Holl a nd slowly crept up and, wit h a better drive R I ou t o f th e tu rn lead ing onto the whoo ped-out.s traightaway, took the lead . H oll and put h is head d o wn a nd s ta rte d clickin g o ff co ns is te nt laps. A ba ttl e for third d eveloped behind Pal ad ino, with Auggie Rodriguez , A rmstro ng and Pesta na all in the mix. Pestana, who a lso suffered fr om a p oor sta rt, had slowly been making his wa y up though the pack and put a move on Armst rong to take over fourth. Rodriguez came ov er a little 'jum p out of sh ape and hit th e d eck, ha nding over third place to Pestana. At th is point, HolI a nd had a co mmanding lead and Paladino appeared to ha ve a lock on second . However , Pestana cru ised by a downed Paladino, who had cras hed after a downhill triple when he cross- rutted in the followi ng tum. Armstrong went by, as welI as th e Yamahas o f Mark Worke"ht in e and Ma rks. Holland rod e on to the wi n, with Pestana second, followed by Armstrong, Workentine and Ma rks . T h e 250cc Intermediate ra ce s a w Merced Powersports /Yamaha /Chaparral-backed Corey Morais take a ha rdfought fir st -m ot e victory over Turtle Wikoff. Morais used the ju m p -fill ed track to his adva ntage a fter taking a th ird -place s ta rt, pa ssing Randy Norman and then Wikoff over the spectacular step-up jump. "I was going to pass Tu rtle (Wikoff) on the d ownhill triple but played it sma rt and set him up over the step-up," said Morais. The second mo to wasn' t so kind to Morais, as a bad s tart saw the Yama ha rider back in fifth, while Randy Norman and Wikoff we re up front. With a little help from Wikoff, who held Mora is to a third-place finis h, NCY Yamah a / FMF/ Wiseco-backed Norman took th e win an d the ov era ll for the d ay with a 3-1 moto score. In the 125cc Intermediate race, DH Cycles of Modesto /Thor /Parts Unlirn it- ed -backed Jesse Ketcha m took a wire-towi re victory in the first moto over Nor ma n. Moto two had a d ifferent en ding. Ketch am got off to a th ird-place sta rt and turned it into a lead by the second la p . Disa ster a lmost s t ruck as a long downhill d ouble caugh t him hitting n eutral ju st on the takeoff. Ketcham cras hed and broke his clu tch perch, ending his hopes for an over all win . Jesse Ol son se iz ed the opportunity a n d w o n the mo to and th e ov erall. Kenny Heess finish ed seco nd for fifth overall. "I almost hit Jesse (Ke tcham) as he was going d own," Ol son said . "I just held my line and mad e it by him." 0 Oatf ield Raceway Turlock, Califo rn ia Results: Septemb er 27, 1998 (Rou nd 2) Small Tra ck 50 FIT (4-6): 1. Andrew Ha....kett (Hus): 2.
