As Roberts pulled away, Rhod es, Spoo ner and No rma n - in that orde r - we re engaged in a heated ba ttle for second place. On the second lap, No rma n we nt past Sp oone r th ro u gh th e w h oo ps sec tio n to tak e third place. The next thr ee laps saw Rhod es hold off Norman's att empts to pass. With tw o lap s to go, Norman passed Rhodes in the same section in which he had p assed Spooner. No rman then set off after Roberts and caug ht him with half a lap to go. No rman tried hard but could not pass Robert s. Thing s heated up quickl y a s the one-hour AAIA race fired off the line. The Expert A class cu t loo se and qui ckl y be cam e the cu stom ar y three-way battle bet ween Overall A titl e contend ers Pat Hohman, Al Cra vens and Lynn Bailey. Expert A-class entry Cody Potts rocked the boat ea rly as he ca me throu gh the scoring barrels entre nched in the mix. After two laps on the 6.5-mile cou rse, Honda o f Hou st on /Pro Clean 1000-ba cked Ly n n Bailey ca me from fourth pl ace after his cus to ma ry two-ki ck sta rt a nd showed why he is going to the 1998 Aust ralian Int erna tiona l Six Da y Enduro by m o vin g through the pa ck and taking comma nd of the lead . Pott s quickl y lost sight of Bailey while battlin g a rear flat and eve ntu ally called it quits. Bailey put the hammer d own and cro ssed the fin ish lin e with nearly a five -m inu te cus hio n ove r second place. Hohman putted in to the finish to claim second ove rall 15 seconds ahead of Crave ns. The Trail Riders of Houston unveiled a new club prop ert y a nd once aga in set the standa rd w ith a fun co u rse th at took the 185 entrants through the now-trademark "d unes" and "badland " a rea . H onda -m ounted Tro y Barro w s whipped the contestant..; for the Overall Bcrown . into a frenzy by blitzin g the pack for a comfortable one-minute margin of victory for Overall B honors over series adversa ry Brian Cecil. Open B rid er Joshua Laurence pressured even tu al class wi nn er Brian Cecil all race but cou ld n't pull the trigg er and had to settle for second . The hard -charge a ward of t he da y wen t to Matt Chapa, who won the Sportsman class after losing his silencer on the gra ss track right after the start. After making repairs, Chapa opened the afte rbu rne rs and mad e up two minu tes, and claimed the lead and the victory. The Overall C victo ry wa s cla imed by Dana Weber from the 200cc C class. Weber snagged the early lead and se t sail to top his class and win the overall on adjus ted time.
