Corns Photo by Dawn Wlnczewskl COLORADO SPRINGS, CO SEPT. 6 , Aztec Family Raceway hosted round seven of the Rocky Mounta in Mot ocr oss Ass ocia tion's Summ er Series, wh ere a co u ple of G ary Se mics Motocross School-sponso red riders got down to wo rk and claimed overa ll wins in their respective classes. Matt Karlsen cruised to victory aboard his GSMXS/ Maxima /Ceet-sponsored Yamaha in the 16- to 24-year-<>ld Combined class, while F&S Suzuki /GSMXS/Xtreme Kolor s-backed Kevin Hall roc keted his RMI25 to a .-1 fini sh in the 12.5cc A class and finished a very respectable second on his RM250 to Sun Gty, California's D0nald Upton in the 250cc A class. Karlsen held down seco nd bu t was under pressu re from Colorado Motorspo rts / Slavens / FMF-backed David Gon za les in third. Huff ' s d ialed-in Yamah a pulled the othe r riders o n th e u phill sect ion an d he maintained his lead th rou gh out the race. Boulder Yamaha /Fox/ GSMX5-backed Bobby Fitch moved up from his fifth-place sta rt and made a pa ss for th ird on GonzalL'S following the sand section. Karlse n conti nued. to work on Hu ff and he cut the ma rgi n to a cou ple of seco nd s. With Fitch moving.up on Karlsen, the three front-runners ro u nded the circuit, eac h wa iti ng for th e slightest bobb le by the others. Karlse n stuffed his fro nt end in a soft comer preceding the sand ' sectio n, a llowing Fi tc h to m ove to withi n a w heel's len gth . With on e lap to go , Karlsen moved alon gside Huff in a race to the finish . The two launched over th e uphill doubles side by side, with Fitch in tow and Gonzales in fourth, five second back. Blitzing the downhill section s three wid e, Huff inched ahead just eno ugh to get through the two fmal comers cleanly for the a dvantage and the win. In th e la s t co rne r, Karlsen d ived to the inside and Fitch to the o utside . The two banged bars, with Karlsen holding on to the position. Fitch finished third , Gonzales was fourth a nd Krause Racing /Rocky Mountain Cycle Plaza 's Clint Tellett was fifth. H ol e shot honors i n m o to two we n t to Karlsen, with Gonzales, Huff, Ma tth e w Wh itmarsh and Fitch following. Hu ff appeared to be a threat as he pull ed u p alongside Gonza les on th e uphill sectio n but , as the two entered the tight le ft -hander befor e their d escent, Huff clipped Gonzales' rear w heel a nd high-sided to the d irt. Fitch qu ickly pa ssed Wh itm ar sh and began to wo rk on Gon zales al so . As Huff climbed back up to sixth, Whitmarsh and Tellett battl ed for fourth. Ka rlsen, Go nza les and Fitch railed the circuit wheel to w heel with only a second separating each. Wit h two laps remaining, Fitch too k over second an d began an assa ult on th e lead er . Time pl ayed a factor, however, as Karlsen held on for the win , with Filch flying in a second la te r. Yama has swe p t the to p three podium positi on s, w ith Ka rlsen cli nc hi ng the overa ll and Fitch second .
