By John S ilva MARYSVILLE, CA, AUG. 22 cott Davis made a clean sweep of the 125cc Pro racing at the first round of the CMC Trans-Cal No rth, held at Riverfro nt Park , winning bot h motos on his F&S/No Toil-backed Suzuki. Davis calls nei ghboring Yuba City home when he's not ou t competing in the AMA Nationals, and the resu lts of his frequent pra ctice on th e "ho metown" track were evi den t to all, as he clearl y had the course d ialed . Davis han ded the lead and subsequen t win to Jake Windham , w ho raced on 'to cap tu re the 250cc Pro overa ll win on his RDW Gra phicss po nso re d Suzu ki, th anks to hi s 3- 1 moto tally. Mor e than 450 ent ries were cou nted (along w ith a large turnout of fans) for the firs t rou nd of the Trans-Cal se ries for 1998 (in eit her the North or South di visions). Nu merous riders came from Sou the rn Californ ia and from states all . across th e West. The large number of classes required to accommodate everyo ne resulted in a long ra ce d a y (a nd evenin g), and racing wasn' t completed until after midnight. Despite the pou nd ing it too k, the Ch arli e Sexton-designed track h eld upwell a nd provided fo r excelle n t ra cin g , a lt ho ug h the seco nd m ot os to ok p lace on a co nsidera b ly rou gher surface . . Davis might not have made it to the line b ut for th e quick w ork of hi s mechanic before the race. His engine had blown up at the previous night's event. "At 2 o'cl ock tod ay, m y crank was laying on the tab le - cases split, bike torn down to the fram e, " sa id Davis. "An hour and a half later, I was on the track, practicin g, thanks to Andy Med in." The 125cc Pros traditionally kid : off th e action at Marysville's Trans-Ca ls, a n d when the g a te fell, it wa s Jeff Northrup who proved to be the quickest, leading the ear ly part of the first lap . Davis shadowed Northrup and immedi- S 2 a tely challenged for the lead. By the time the Pros com p leted the firs t lap, fans saw itwas tall and la n ky Scott Davis out front, looking like a modernday version of former champ Mike "Too Tall" Bell as Davis leaned his Suzuki way over while roosting Marysville' s huge, sweeping turn one. "I go t a seco nd-place start, but I got by Northrup rea lly quick," said Davis. "He stayed p ret ty close behind me and was pu sh ing rea l ha rd - which is good but I stayed ahea d of him." Battling for positions behind the lead e rs were A uggie Ro dr igu ez , Trevor Meagher, Jake Windham, [arrad Fisher a nd th e res t of th e d ozen 125cc Pros. These riders wo uld cont inue to sprea d ou t as the race progressed , wit h Davi s gradually stepping away from the others to build a comforta ble lead . The race for second th rough fifth w as closer, wit h No rth rup, Rodrigu ez, Meagh er, Fish er and Windham racing, in that ord er, only seconds apa rt until presented with the whi te flag on lap seven. On the final lap, Pro Circuit /N-St y le-b a cked Mea gh er turn ed i t up a n otch a n d go t by Rodriguez. At th e mot a ' s end, it w as Davis, North ru p a nd Mea gh er on th e ros tru m; Rodrigu ez , Fish er, Windham, Daniel Blair, Ben Shan k, Eric Ducray and Levi Reed rounded out the top 10. Davis took the holesh ot in the second 125cc Pro mota and wasted no time distancing himself from the pack. First-lap action included a heated dic e between Wind ham and Northrup, with Windham taking over second place after what was d es cribed as a clean pass. Soon aft er, Northrup was seen circlin g the track at the back of the field. Davis had a good view of the action in the ba ck section, and he had time to check out so me of the ba ttl e behind him even as he pu t di stance on the riders traili ng him. " I kn ow for a fact Ja ke Wi nd ham pa ssed Northrup fair and square for second. Th en Northrup, all of a sudden and so me of the other gu ys, like Cliff Cook - were just cru isin' around the tra ck . Th ey m u st have got in a cras h . Jake was doing real well after a horrible first mota, so that 's aweso me for him," sa id Da vis, w ho of ten engages Wi ndham in mock battl e wh en p racticing at the track.. Meagher mad e his moves on lap two, overtaking Rodriguez, who was su ffering from arm pump a nd fading fast . Fisher was the nex t racer to ge t by, and he gave c hase o n th e leade rs fro m fou rth , just behi n d Me a g he r . Meanwhile, Daniel Blair was on the gas and passed several of his fading competitors around mid race to secu re the fifth posi tion . The order then held firm as the rid ers blit zed the laps until the checkered flag flew . Taking the win and the overall money was Davis, followed by Windham, whose 6-1 score was good for third ov erall 125cc Pro. Meagher garnered third in the mota, earning second place ov erall. [arrad Fisher made his pro fessional debu t a memorable one, going 5-4 to ea rn a n imp ressive four th overa ll. Blair rounded out the top five wi th his 7-5 mota scores . In the 25 0c c Pro ra ce , Windh am gra bbed th e hol esh o t ahea d of David Lod er m e ie r, Mea g he r, Da vi s, Bla ir , No rthrup, Danny Paladino, Dennis Stapleton, Dus tin Bloomfield, Trav is Marks an d t h e res t of th e fi eld . Davis continu ed h is cha rge by pa ss in g Lodermei er, with o rt h ru p followin g h im aro u nd to put Da vis and N orthrup in second a nd third pl ace behind Windham jus t as th e white flag came ou t. Afte r leadin g nearly th e en tire mot a, Windham was overtaken by both Davis and North ru p in one of th e la st turns exiting the back se ctio n. Da vis ra ced down the final section to claim first, followed by Northru p, Windham, Lodermeier, Meagher, Blair, Palad in o, Stapleton, Marks and Ben Shank. In the seco nd 250cc Pro mota, Windham wa s again the qu ick starte r, racing ahea d of Lodermeier, Shank, Northru p, Stapleton and all the rest. Things went all wrong for Davis as he took a fall only a few turns from the star t, and alt hough he was u nh urt, his borrowed bike w~s a li ttle tw ea ke d , so he ca lled it a aa y ra ther than risk an y fur ther damage. Wind ham pu t toge ther seven flawless laps this time out a nd raced to 11 well-deserved win, with North rup in tow. Third place in the mo to and overall was Lod ermeier, with Sha nk fourth ; a poor finish in the first mota held Shank to ninth overall. Fifth in the mo ta was Paladino, good for fourth overall.
