riders making the podium. Round four
of the series proved to be no different,
with ye t another new ov erall winner,

of the four-race seri es, nin e di fferent riders had made pod ium a p p ea ra nces ,
making this the most com petitive field
of female racers ever assembled.
As the series rolled into the New York
hillsides of the Torn Hurd-owned facility
of Broome-Tioga Sports Center, Team
Green /LCS / Answer-ba cked racer Dee
Wood - he ld a 22 -point le ad over
Thor / Sco tt/ Bing hamton Honda-sponsored Sedanna Losey of Reno, Nevada .
Losey, who won th e season opener at
Glen Hele n, ne ed ed a win to have a
cha nce to s tea l the title from Wood,
althoug h a seven th and a finish in front of
Losey would wrap up the title for Wood.

With the battle lines clearly drawn,
the riders lined up for th e first mot o.
Adding drama to the scenario were the
facts that Wood had crashed hard at the
World Cu p the da y before the event and
that her physical condition wa s ques tionable. As the gated dropped for rnoto
one, Shealy rip ped the start a long side
Kann . Wi th less than the w idth of a
paper separat ing the two riders, Sheal y
slithered in to the first-moto hol eshot.
Kann ni pped at her heel s, with Wood
pullin g alongside in th ird . Satchwell
was four th, with Harris, Angie Keuntjes,
Losey, Fleming, Linds ay Cron a nd
Hu ghes rounding out the top 10. As the
pack headed up the hill, Shealy held the
poi nt positi on , followed by Kann . As
they disappeared into the trees, Satchwell moved aro u nd Woo d into third . As
the rid er s hit the Di nner Table - a 90foo t tabletop - Sa tchwell si lenced the
crowd wi th a huge leap, closing the gap.

Wood continued her backward slid e
into the pac k as Harris gobbled her up
on the following lap. N ext in line was
Hugh es, who also wanted a piece o f
Wood . Just a tick behi nd and corning up
fas t wa s Fleming . Wood got a break
when Losey crashed and dropped back
to 10th . Keuntjes also fell victim to the
track and the harried pace, as she also
crashed at the halfway po int, dropping
to 18th. Up front , Shea ly - racing with a
cracked sternum a nd a bruised knee was oblivious to the mad frenzy behind
her . She sold iered on to a popular win
over Kann , Satchwell, Harris and Wood ,
followed closely by Hughes, Fleming,
Losey, Bonnie Warch and Van Vugt.
After the first moto, Kann ad mitted
to being nervo us on the start.
"I go t a pretty good jump," she
ex p la ined, " bu t not what I wan ted . 1
tried to get around as man y people as 1
cou ld, rea l quick. The kicke rs we re, like,
thr ee feet hig h and it was a little slick.
When I saw Shealy look back before the
white flag, 1 dug a littl e d eeper. In the
back sec tion, I got caug ht beh ind a lapper. I was hopi ng to ge t around Shealy,
bu t it jus t didn't work ou t that wa y."
" It was to ug h to pass out ther e," Harris a d d ed. "I was ri ght with Dee th e
w hole moto , I go t by her abo ut two laps
from the end on this left-hand sweeper
go ing uphill. This track is really fast and
bumpy. There were big whoops on the
downhills. You could ha rd ly go that fast
or the back end would kick around . You
had to really ride cau tious to make sure
you sta yed up."
A quick scan of the calcul at ors
sho wed Wood had gained three points
on Lose y. The only wa y Losey cou ld
gai n the title was if Wood D Fed. Losey
could only hope for lightning to strike
tw ice . Should Wood su ffe r a disaste r
like sh e did during the World Cup,
Losey would be champ. Wood 's strategy was simple: Finish sev enth or beller
and the title was hers.
As m ot o two r oared off the lin e ,
Shea ly again nailed the start, wit h Satch w ell , Kann , Harris Fleming, Losey,
Wood, Michelle Bedna r, Keu ntjes and
Warc h in tow . Satchwell took advantage
of Shea ly's ba tter ed bod y a nd leaped
into the lea d over the Din ne r Table.
Ka nn a lso qui ckly d ro pped Shea ly to
third as the rid ers dropped into the big
dow nhill. Bed na r was ne xt to fold as
Keu n~es relegated her to ninth. Hu gh es
wa s mired in the pack following a fall
and was riding the wheels off her U.S.
Suzuki-backed mount, clawing her way
into ninth by lap four.
Satchwell was clearly using her mastery of the Dinner Tab le to her advantage
by usin g the large leaps to inch out some
br eathing room over Kann. Kann took
ad vantage of the free school offered by
Satchwell and soo n added a few aerials
o f her o w n. Kann see med to g ro w
stronger as the moto progressed, and her
probes on the leader became increasingly
more aggressive. On the white-flag lap ,
Sa tch we ll landed hard off a jump and
severely twisted her ankle. Kann, sensing
oppo rtu nity, attacked the wounded prey
of Satchwell at every turn. Side by side,
these two battled within inches as the
flag carne into view. Satchwell dug deep,
repelling the advances of the det ermined
Kann to secur e the overall victor y. Kann
rolled across the line visibly disappointed in seco nd , with Shealy claiming the
fin al pod ium s p o t. Harris -wa s aga in
fourth, with Losey fifth and Wood sixth.
Hughes elbowed her way in to the seventh spot, followed by Keu nt jes, Warch
and Bednar.
As Satchwell limped to the podium,
she reflec ted on the day's events.
"I got the holeshot a nd led most of
the laps," she sa id . "I cased it over the
- Din ner Table one lap and reall y hu rt my
ankle. Every time I jumped it, the pain
just shot up, but I handled the pain and
kep t it pinned and s tayed in fron t of
Kann for the win. It was good. The race
was so competitive. I'm glad I was able
to hold on to win. There wa s a threewa y tie on points for the overall."
"I didn't get the start I wanted, bu t I
moved up fas t," Kann said. "I did good
the first couple of laps and then kinda
tensed up in the middle. The last few
laps I felt really good, more rela xed . I
wish th e motes we re longer. Next year
I am go i ng to train h arder and be
ready."
"At Loretta's , I bruised my ste rnum
and tore the cartilage in m y kn e e ,"
Shealy said after her third-place ride. "I
hit the handlebars and my legs carne off
the pegs. 1 thought 1 ha d p unc tu red a
lung becau se I was spi lling up blood . I
was trying to give it 100 percen t today,
but 1 a m only a t 85 per cent and I still
hav e to go to the doctor for my knee.
The tracks in Texas don't ge t an ywhere
near as rough . Th is tr a ck b eat me 'to
dea th, bu t I love it! It is an a wesome
track. I wish we had mo re tracks like
th is in Texas. The gi rls put in a great
rid e tod ay and they carne ou t on top. It
jus t wasn' t my da y."
