Springsteen (9) and Parker (1) battled for
the lead. King then came up and made it a
four-rider fight. Springsteen dropped back
and finished fifth, beh ind Steve Morehead.

his son , Austin "Spike" Parker , and with
longtime tuner Bill Werner.

wide across the line. They were followed
by Va rnes and Da vis, with Moreh ead
alrea dy havin g worked his way to sixth.
Springsteen led the field off turn four an d
had th e ad va ntage. but when they sho t
down the front stra igh t, Parker pulled out
and swung pa st , with Carr gett ing th e
double d raft to lead them into one. Fay
was already off the lead pace, but the 37year-old Washington 1T ace appeared to
be having the time of his life aboard his
borrowed Tim "Taco" Torrecillas-owned
Turbo Blue Racing Gasolin e H onda.

finishin g 15th . "This place is rea lly fast. I
didn't d o w or th a shit at this (mile racing) 15 yea rs ago, and I still ain't worth
a cra p a t it now. I'm ol der and wiser.
Bu t it was an honor jus t to ge t to come
and ride this race."
Well ahead of Fay, bu t well behind the
lead ers, Ko pp , Stanley, Murphree a nd
Coolbeth were stagi ng their own tita nic
clash, whi ch held almost as much interest
as the lead chase. Stanley wound up "winning" this battle, as he sett led for 11tho
