Iwa naga and Az tec Raci ng rider Hererra. As Mayfield and Iwanaga pulled away, H er erra was hounded by Steve Johnson, Simonsen and Pauley, who was trying to make his way to the fron t after a poor start. Pau ley took advantage of Joh nson and Simonsen's ba ttle, d ivi ng inside to pull in beh ind Hererra, leaving tire ma rks obliterating the numbers on Hererra 's inside nu mber plate. Pa uley p ulled inside Hererra going in to turn one, bu t wo uld have to wait for the back straight to pass the tenacious Hererra on his Bill Fagundes-tuned Wood -Rot ax . Simo nsen was working to ge t by Johnson on the ou tside as Robert Seay went down in turn one, taking Allan McClellan up to the bales, whil e Jesse Sanchez had no place to go but ove r the top, coming to a halt in the hay.
