In an interview segmen t wi th Kenny Tolbert (Carr's tuner), I mad e it seem as though Kenny had built all of Chris' Peoria-winning bikes, and that's not tru e. Ron Wood built the 1987 winner and Mike Camphouse did the'68 winner. I wa nt to give Ron and Mike credit where credit is due, an d apol ogize to Ch ris fo r any embarrassm ent m y encroaching senility ma y ha ve caused. Thanks to everyone for watching the sho ws . Box 805, Tucker, GA 30085-0805 (770) 934-7850 FAX (770) 934-3112 Dear Mot orcvcle Manufacturers, Motor-: cycle Dealers and Riders: Wh y ar e w e letting the California Air Resources Board put the m otorcycle and watercraft industries ou t of bu siness in California? Just think - th e rest of th e states ar e next. There used to be 100 d ifferent motorcycles tha t we could purchase here in Californi a to ride on onr public land - now there are just a handful. Wh ose grea t idea is this? Did I miss some thing? And w hy are all you dealers just taking this crap? Don't you care about you r bu siness? First it ' s the m ot orcycl es, next the watercraft and then the power equipment. If you leave it up to CARB, you dealers w'ill have nothin g left to sell and I w on't have anything to rid e, camp with, or play on the wat er wi th. Isn 't it time th at the ma nufactu rers, the aftermarket compa nies and the deal ers get together and start to pu t some pressure back on CARB? Heck, this is California .- sue the ir ass. Th a t could be o ne heck o f a la w suit. Now where is that m ot orcycle law yer when you need him ? Steve Webb Chatsworth , CA . See our "In Th e Wind " sect ion in this week's issue for more information on the latest from CARB... Editor Tony D. on Big Dave Everything Ed Youngblood wrote about e-ma il . Dave Coombs was absolu te ly true. As M r . Youngbl o od n ot ed , Da v e w a s a giver and not a ta ker. In every thing he did, Dave consid ered those arou nd him. He was always ready to help anyone in the business. Dave always welcomed my schools at his events, including Steel Ci ty, Mount Morr is and the Ama teur National at Loretta Lynn's. But it was afte r my accident that I realized how mu ch Dave went out of his way for those in need . O ne time w hen I suddenly became sick and co u ldn' t make th eAmat eur Nationa l, Dave cov ere d for m e. H e a llowed my crew to come, set up and serve the riders as planned . With all he had to do, Dave took time to keep tabs on my staff and m ake s u re every thi n g was runnin g smoothly for me. ' Dave was s o con cerned a bo u t m y . road travel that he suggested Is eriously co ns id e r hos ti n g my own Na tional ev ent. Every time we me t, he would bring up the subject. He offered to g uide me thro ug h the process . There are many who could tell stories of Da ve' s willingness to help, cou nse l and advise. We have all been touched in so me w ay by this wond erful and gen erous man . He wa s truly a friend to each rider, parent, sponsor and specta to r he met alo ng the w ay . Everv time w e hear th e roar of the engine at an eve n t spo nsored by Racer Prod uctions, we wi ll remember him . Dave Coom bs was a great man and he will be missed . I kn o w all of us in th e industry sen d our pr ayers to Rita and her family . Tony D iStefan o New Wi ndsor, M D DiStefano won the AMA 250cc Natio nal Motocross Championship in 1975, 1976 and 1977... Editor Carr Kudos Kud os to Chris Carr. On Sunday, August 23, the day -after the AMA Grand National Dirt Track at H agerstown, Chris volunteered on a hot and humid day to help ou t at a sh o rt tr a ck in Shi p pensbu rg, Pennsylvania. He kept bu sy by lining u p riders an d giving ou t awards. I' m sure the ri ders, es pecia lly the younger ones, are more like ly to rem em ber more w ho gave them th e a wards than the actual awards themsel ves. This is t~e type of public-relations work that will build dirt tra ck racing for both riders and spectators. Other Grand Na tional rid ers should take not e a nd d evelop their own public-rel ati ons methods. Bob Sassaman Jr. Schwenksville, PA Prom ot ers A-Okay I would like to thank some of our ou tdoor m otocross promo ter s for th e fine work and improvements they have made . Year after year, the Kenw orth ys give us one of th e g rea test co nd itions to race on . Th e tra ck always looks p ro fessio nal, track preparat ion is perfect, and all th e little thin gs such as pit parking, the mechan ics area, etc., always have refreshments. And they go the extra mile to give the riders a little ex tra money on top of the purse. Don, you do a g reat job and we appreciate it. The Ritchies have also made great improvements to their facility - with new pit parking and bet ter track access. Red Bud has also put in a bleacher section that looks really professio nal. I love going to this facility - so keep up the good work, Gene and family . Lastly, I would like to thank the Coombs famil y, as they alway s put on a super race. The im provements this year a t Mount Morris included pit parking and a new tower. Th is track is always a favo rit e, es pecially if you can keep Mother Na ture happy. I would also like to give my deepest sympathy from myself and the rest of us at Honda of Troy Racing to the Coombs fam ily o n th e passing of Dave Sr. Our thoughts and prayers are w ith yo u all. You ha ve a g rea t family and the sport has really benefited from all yo ur su pport. Marshall Pl umb St illwater, OK Pillmb is a race-team technician for Honda of Troy...
