AMA Pro-A mHillclimb Johnston's king of thel1ill By Clay LIght STURGIS, SD, AUG.7 V A a ~ ~ eteran hillclimber Dave Jo hnston made the trek from Billings , Monta na, pa y off by posting three class win s at the AMA Pro-Am hiIlclimb on the [ackpine Gypsies' clubgrounds. Johnston e a rned w ins in th e 251400cc, 401-500cc and 501-750cc classes, also posting the da y's fastest ascent to the top of the infamous 21O-foot hill during his 401-500cc-class win, wi th a run of 4.84 seconds - one of only three to break the five-second barrier, two of w hich came in th e da y' s fastes t cla ss, the 401-5 00c c e ve n t. Fo r hi s efforts, johnston to ok home $550 from the $3500 Pro purse. Arnold Jelin ek' s run up the "Gypsy Mountain" wa s also a scorcher, his time of 4.98 coming just one run prior to the clock -shatterin g 4.84 of Johnston 's run. Jelinek, thou gh, turned the tabl es on 20ye ar hillclimb vetera n Johnston wi th a win in th e SOl -750cc class , w here he beat Jo h ns to n's mark of 5.14 with a cla sswi nning 4.96, th e third and final mark under five seco nds on his second climb of the ru tted-out hill. Omaha, ebraska's Harold Waddell co n tes te d fi v e cl a s se s o n th e d ay, alt hough he only came away from th e Black Hills w it h a single cla ss wi n in what w as an unplanned ride - the 86125cc class . Waddell's ne xt-best performance came wh en he pla ced seco nd in the 201-250cc class to Jelinek, who won the class with a 5.46-second time . While the m ost popular mach in e in a tte nda nce was; naturally, a n 1400cc Harley-Davidson , ridden by W iscon. sin's Lloyd Mu eller , the Nati onal Open Am at eur Cl ass C hamp ion , th e he avy machine that wa s king in the horsepower department would only net the popular rid er a fourth-place finis h in the 751O pen class . "This type of track typ ically favo rs the lighter, two-stroke SOOcc machines," said Mu eller , w ho woul d later come back to take a fourth-place finish in the 501-750cc class aboa rd a KTM 540 wi th a 5.37 - his fastest time of the day - to trail Jelinek (4.96),Jo hnston (5.14) and Dvo rak (5.33). A mateurs Pe rry Bicek a nd Clayton Riggl e were a lso impressive in th eir final showings of th e se ries. Bicek , of Rapid City, won the co mpetitive 250cc an d Open A ma in e vents , a n d Mi s so u ri 's Riggle was the w in ner of th e 60cc A m a in. The d im inutive Ri ggl e swep t th e class in a ll th ree a ma teu r even ts , p osting two sh o r t-trac k w ins and one half mile victory a. the week's top ama teur pe rformer. Wyom in g' s Cameron Mea ns came closes t to dethroning Riggle, though, in Satu rday night's 60cc final. Means po sted a narrow win ahead of Riggle d uring qu alifyin g, but Riggle jumped out front of the class' s fina l and was never challenged. Means, though, ended his night with a cras h, finis hing sixth behi nd Riggle, Steele Ben digo , L.N . Waggene r, Nick McDayoll and D.J. Brink . Means came back one race lat er to take a w ire -to-wire win in th e 80cc A mai n, his seco nd wi n of the three amateur races . Na te Nee ther of Gille tte, Wyoming, finished second to Mean s in th e fina l, also wi nni ng the class title, breaking the streak of Northwest d omin at io n b y Be au Bro w n (1995), Sean Lig h t (1996) a n d Nick Se lle rs (1997) . T h i rd wen t to Ya ma ha ' ri der Jaco b Keierleber. Oregon's Sean Lig h t scored a runawa y win of the 125 cc A m a in . Th e Honda-mounted Light, who did th e same in his heat race, ra n well ou t in front of eether and Danielle Beving. Fou rth went to Suzuki rider Devin Wenz, followed by Te xas ' Scott Beck'ley. Bicek was another runaway winner, this win coming in 250cc action. Bicek put his ATK out in front of the field , followed by fellow ATK jockey Ros s Ronde, Darrin Lipp a nd Chris Feist, who started from th e penalty row and mo ved up through tr affic to cha llenge Rond e fo r se co n d as Bicek' s lead increased. A three- rider pileup, tho ugh, brought th e action 1"0 a n end as Feist , Lipp and Ronde tangled . Lipp esca ped to net second ahead of Nick Olson. Bicek also got the jump on the tworow fie ld of O pen A con testa nts, fol. lowed closely by Stu rg is' Darrell Brink. The two competitors were never more tha n a w heel apa rt; Bicek's double-win tall y was co m pleted after he sla mmed the doo r shut on Brink in the last turn. Beving scored his fi rst-ever wi n as a Pro-Sport-class competitor, taking a 250cc main-event win ahead of Su zuki rider Sheldon Wenz and Jami e Vollmer, who was the pole sitter. Vollmer drifted off the groove and wouldn't reco ver, allowing Beving to earn a win. Jacob Latimer also turned his performances up 'a notch each night, finalizing an impressive week for the Honda r id er withhis 600cc P ro-Sport w in . Latimer beat Vollm er, w h o h eld o ff local rider Randy Coughlin for second. . Fourth went to Beving, w ho was followed by Tim Sears a nd Sou za , w horallied to fini sh sixth. Brown, though , lost the lead to Larvie wh en he bobbled ; Brown did, howev er , stay on the veteran rid er's rea r wheel for the remaind er of the race to finish seco nd to th e local rid er .
